Which would you prefer involving the 50s over tone.

I was wondering what was more popular the heavy 50s theme of Fallout 3, or the 50s/60s theme of New Vegas. (Basicly did people like the heavy emphasis of the 50s theme (like i did), or the lighter 50s bleeding into the 60s theme)

(sorry if this was already a topic i was simply wondering)

I really fine with either one tbh, I kinda like to switch things up every now and then to keep it interesting so either is fine.

I like the 50's theme, should have some 40's in there…

Also, NPC's shouldn't stop making music… I really want some dark minimal techno in there in a desert rave someplace weird.

New Vegas, but I thought both were too heavy and I never really had any 50's feel from the old games aside from what's in the past and as a contrast to the harsh new reality

The barrage of the out of place 50's atmosphere in Fallout 3 really got on my nerves after a while.

The atmosphere of New Vegas felt a lot more subtle and moldable to me. I never felt even close to being smothered by it.

50's/60's but it should be subtle and in the background, not "in-your-face" like Fallout 3 was.

I didn't like the overdone 50's in FO3. So I preferred NV (although it, too, had that feel to a lesser extent).

My personal preference was the mix of 50's and the hint of 80's punk the original games had.

I liked the 50s look (though what was there were similar in both the latter two games in my opinion - but I didn't really find them overdone), though, perhaps they could tone it down a bit for the next one with some Dieselpunk elements (30s/40s war era), and some early 60s jet set age and James Bond elements for the pre war influences of the game.

I liked the "hints of the past" feel you get in the originals It was one of the reason's the FO3 felt so off key because you had so much of it shoved in your face it felt like you where still talking to first gen survivors, since they all talked, knew about and practiced behavior from the 50's.

I think they should start moving away from 50's mainstream culture or at least go more into 50's sub-culture

Yeah, this sums up my feelings nicely. I felt like the retro vibe felt a bit ham-fisted in F3, as if theyd made the game then gone "OH GOD! I DONT THINK WE HAVE ENOUGH RETRO! QUICK PUT SOME EVERYWHERE!!!!!"

I would love to hear a hidden pirate radio station that played music that is ahead of the times. They would play music that isn't from the fifties but entirely new made from the "NPC's" of the wasteland.

i would like to see it toned down, because the 50s clothing, hair, art styles and cars are great, but the fallout games are set hundreds of years into the future, so, to say that technology, music, etc... have not changed at all is absurd.

overall this is a very subjective question, but i'm sure most people can agree that fallout 3 went a little too far with the 50s theme.

Agreed. Also: It's not a "50's theme" and it's not ambiguous. It's retro-futurism and cannot be changed. The whole damn creative direction of the franchise has it's backbone located within "What would people from the 50's have imagined the future to be like/look like?" It's been about 5 years since Bethesda [censored]-humped the franchise and people are still confused by this. Incredible. Incredible, though not surprising.

I also think the timeline wouldn't have changed that much compared to ours and it wouldn't be so heavily 50's based. Regardless of that, I think anything after the war would completely change and the 50's ideals would just be a thing of the past, with maybe a few minor people/places trying to hold on to that memory. It would be a new harsh gritty world without any real 50's influence.
As undecafindeed said, I also got a bit of that 80's punk vibe, and also a vibe of 80's movie post apocalyptic and dystopian future cyberpunk feel. The 50's were only a memory of pre-war governmental ideals to me.

That's the word I've been looking for, retro-futurism.
I miss it. :/

I liked the 50s music in FO3. It was neat hearing what the people 200 years earlier were listening to as I'm walking through the ruins of their civilization.

I prefer Fallout 1 and 2's 50's comic style.

To me playing Fallout 1 and 2 feels like jumping into a choose your-own-adventure style creepshow-esque comic book, just instead of a horror comic, it's a post-apocalyptic comic.

New Vegas because it has the same feel as Fallout and Fallout 2. Fallout 3 over did it with the 1950s thing. The world looked like it ended only a couple years ago, not 200. Pretty much everyone was frozen in time, still acting like it was 2077. While the other Fallout games people moved on and formed new cultures, the 1950s retrofuture deal is there but in the background. The robots, the destroyed cars and building and so on, but the people long since stopped trying to act "1950s".

I really like the 50's tone in whats left of the environment. I dont feelthe people of the wastes should have a 50's mentality, though, unless they are something like the kings, basing their ideologies off of something from the past.

I do feel there is room enough to play to both the F3 and NV styles though, considering they are different locations.
Most places in the US are vastly different. For iunstance, the midwest tends to be about 10 years behind the coastal communities in some aspects.
