Snap to Z axis?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 5:11 am

So I'm new to this whole GECK thing and I'm having a bit of trouble creating my first custom vault. The issue comes from not being able to simply snap vault hall pieces together.

Everytime I try to place a new vault hall piece It gets added WAY above were I want it. Probably because I'm zoomed out trying to get a top down perspective. I've edited the Z axis to each object one by one until there in the right spot, but there MUST be a better way.

How can I place these vault hall pieces in a top down perspective so that they always load on the same Z axis everytime a new piece is introduced?

I've read through some articles in the wiki, but for some reason there's not much explaining how to just simply navigate around the main window were you view the models.

I'm guessing your running into this issue when your using an object editing pallet or try to dropping them in form the form list.

Placing statics can be tricky when your new, You have to know the right spot to click to get them on the same grid level. Just use the "G" or "F" key to get them close and the snap should take care of the rest. Once you get more familiar with how the tiles work you will run into this issue less.

happy modding,

Ok, Not sure what G does, but F seems to make the object move down slightly, but never snaps to the other hallway pieces.

There must be a way to set a level plane Z axis and have all pieces land on that same plane on the z axis.

Also I press "T" to try to get a perfect top down view, but sometimes it just doesn't work.

How do you guys edit buildings. I figure you'd want a top down perspective for the most part right?

The "G" key will raise the tile or object just as the "F" key drops it. You may also what to try "Shift-Q" which sets your snap point to a tile that you choose. When you see the red circle click on a tile and that will be your new snap center. Set your grid to something low like 4 or 8, you'll have better luck getting things together.

I tend to use the 3/4 perspective for most things, I do zoom in to check if my snap is correct and, I move things around by holding the "X", "y" keys to keep them moving in straight lines.

Hope this helps

Ok, I'm in top down perspective now. I hit shiftQ like you said and clicked on a tile when the crosshair turned red. Nothing significant seemed to happen.

Now that I think of it. I don't see any grid lines. I believe some grid lines would help me with perspective. I googled, but I can't figure out how to turn on simple grid lines.

There are no grid line to be had, Are you sure you have the snap to Grid toggled? It is the button with the grid and, the red circle in it, next to the 45 degrees button. (Not trying to be rude or, saying your stupid, it's just that I've never had this much trouble with getting the snap to work.) Sometimes things go get off grid for some odd reason, that is why I suggested using the Shift Q to zero out your grid snap to a tile you want to snap to.

I am trying to help and, am not trying to be offensive, there are some GECK functions that don't work on my computer, could be a similar issue for you. Mine are I can't view objects in the "Object pallet" window, Well I can see them but, I can't rotate them to see all sides, This is the same if I try to look at any model in other windows too.
