College of Winterhold Lectures

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 3:21 am

Please write up a summary of these lectures and present it in a new thread here.

K.
  • Collete Marance's Lecture; She describes non-healing uses for Restoration spells as a response to insulting notes suggesting Restoration isn't a valid school of magic, and ought to be left to the priests.
  • Drevis Norelen's Lecture: He talks about Skyrim's Doomstones. They are somewhat different looking from other Doomstones. There is no pattern to their placement. There are no records of the Doomstones dating to the Merethic, despite common assumption they were made during that time.
  • Faralda's Lecture: The Synod and the College of Whispers are investigating the College of Winterhold. Faralda remarks the College of Whispers prefers magic banned by the Synod, like Necromancy and Conjuration. The Synod wish to find supporters, and the College of Whispers wish to discover darker magical practices so they can prove the Synod are a political minority. The College of Winterhold remains neutral on the matter. She tells students that if they are contacted by a member of one of these two organisations, they should say nothing and merely refer them to the Master Wizard.
  • Phinis Gestor's First Lecture : Phinis Gestor warns against practising Conjuration and Necromancy in public. Additionally, he informs about a prank on Drevis where several hundred apples were stuffed into his pillow.
  • Phinis Gestor's Second Lecture: Phinis warns those borrowing texts from the Arcaneum not to damage the books, or if they do so to find a replacement copy, less they pay Urag's blood price. Additionally, he is looking for a student who turned invisible and caused some mischief in Winterhold.
  • Phinis Gestor's Third Lecture: Phinis asks for information on some missing students. He reminds everyone the MIdden has been closed due to an "outbreak" of some sort. He asks to keep the college clean after cases of people spraining their ankles after accidentally stepping on soul gems.
  • Phinis Gestor's Fourth Lecture: Phinis talks about several theories about the Eye of Magnus; namely that is actually part of Magnus, that it is a conduit to Aetherius, and that it contains the Aurbis within itself, and when you look at it you are actually outside existence.
  • Urag's Lecture: Urag talks about Shalidor, and how he built Labyrinthian to hold Glamoril (Elvish for Secret of LIfe). He theorizes that Glamoril was the source of Shalidor's immense wisdom, as he was able to live multiple lifespans in a short matter of time. Shalidor had magical knowledge that surpasses even the modern era, and he was incredibly prolific, writing on a diverse array of subjects.

How did I miss every single freaking lecture in game? I didn't even freaking know that there were lectures. And I was freaking Archmage.

Wow did they choose a poor replacement for Savos Aren...

To whom are these lectures even given? Those three students that are the only ones attending the College?

here are some of them recorded if you want to actually listen to them.

the one time i've seen one for myself it was one of the teachers lecturing all the other teachers. the students might have been there too. i think whoever listens to them might be just a random collection of people affiliated with the college.

Hm, if these happen daily they might make some good RP fodder. Even if there are no actually lessons beyond the first, spaced out to two a week those lectures could give me over a month of time as an actualy student before having to start the whole, overly short, questline - and I can break that up by reeeaally taking my time with helping out the various members of the place. Weeeeeeee.

Thanks for this.^

Just saw my first lecture in-game. How often do these happen? I came back about the same time a couple nights later and no lecture.

Like the bit about the College of Whispers. Gives me some ideas for a new roleplay.

Interesting. I wonder if the College of Whispers was (at least in part) founded by the necromancers from Oblivion? Maybe they finally realised violence wasn't winning them any friends.

Well this is fun, it seems I managed to miss these when I played through (which is understandable, I was a little rushed). Bit about the Eye is nice.

Hmmm...maybe some of the surviving Necromancers went underground and reemergered with the College of Whispers? I like that idea. I should probably check the dates of the formation of the College of Whispers, considering that it'd be a stretch if it was formed late in the 4th Era.

It makes sense. The end of Oblivion's Mages Guild quest involved Traven resorting to Necromancy and using the Colossal Black Soul Gem to defeat Mannimarco, and he was the staunchest enemy of Necromancy in the Guild.

It was around in the novels, which was around 4E 40.
