It started when I went to meet the count of Skingrad at 2am by the mine to return a book...we know how much sense that made. Well, the sheppard was coming by with a sheep, just as three black figures and that count's vile steward man arrived. He said the usual stuff about putting my body to good use, then the killing began. The sheep attacked the bad guys. Have you ever seen a sheep attack bad guys in Oblivion? They just sort of point their snozzle into the crotch of the bad guy- and ram forward.
Meanwhile the capt of the guard comes by wanting to talk to me about the crazy elf who thinks everyone is out to get him- the sheep is killed, I get the bounty, so am arrested after the Count's dialogue sequence. You know if a sheep is killed near you, at least the ones from Skingrad- you get a 5 dollar bounty.
When I got out of jail after paying the fine (and incidentally- the bounty made the captain forget to talk to me about the crazy elf, which is why he even found me at 2am) There was a group of heavily armed people waiting for me. I didn't know who they were- but they started fighting the town's guards. I tried attacking one, but he yelled; "Wait a minute- I'm on your side"
I'd had enough- bounties, strange people fighting- and pulled the disk and started the game over at another save.
I looked up what happened- and found out any surviving guards at Bleak mine will hunt you down until they find you, waiting for you if you have any jail exposure. That explained them. (the daedric artifact quest bleak mine ogres...) I told myself with some pleasure to remember this so I'd be prepared next time.
I was in the Dark Brotherhood and eliminating Draconis family members and finally killed the guard captain at Lleywan (sic) which got me a 1000 dollar fine. I choose to go to Imperial City to get arrested. When I was ready, I ran out of my house and found a guard to go along quietly with and pay the fine. Next thing I know I'm out on the patio by the jail and there's a swarm of people around- bleak mine guards- I'd forgotten. But what I hadn't known was that any surviving members of the Fighter's Guild from the mine quest of delivering weapons will also be on hand. Everybody started fighting everybody. It was chaos. I tried a fire bolt and hit what I thought was a bleak mine guard, and he yelled, "I'm on your side". The trouble with that, is when at Bleak mine I'd hit everyone I could with a charisma spell- and they'd yelled the same thing at me then when I tried attacking. Some of the fighters looked familiar to me, the Redguard acher for instance, and she smiled at me- I knew she was not my enemy, but couldn't tell the fighters' without a program. I stayed back.
If I thought the Fighters Guild and the Imperial Guard would quickly sort things out I was mistaken- soon they were fighting one another, and then Imperial Guards were fighting other Imperial Guards. I'd seen the two forestals battle near Bruma, but nothing like this. The Jailer was kiiled by other Imperial soldiers! (I took his keys just in case I didn't already have a copy) When it was over, there were at least 5 dead soldiers and that was friendly fire. At the end, I healed up a Fighter's Guild member, happy to be alive. Just in time, the surviving soldiers came over and killed him.
What a mess.
The unoffical Oblivion patch fixes both parties from showing up when you go to jail- which I think is a mistake- the Bleak Mine guards should hunt you down.
But all in all, this was the worst mess I've ever had in Oblivion, and after thousands of hours of play, the game still surprises me. It really was a lot of fun. I didn't like the Figher's guild types being killed. Now I'll have to see if I'm facing any disciplinary action in case I hit one of them.....
