Just looking for opinions... Been a while since I played and i'm wondering if mods are"necessary" like some are considered to be for morrowind. Suggestions?

I would suggest buying GOTY for pc. You can choose to play with mods or not. With all of the tweaks, fixes and diversity that thousands of mods make available to you there is no reason not to get the pc version unless your pc won't run it. An unrelated example for me was I played Morrowind to death on Xbox and when I got it for pc it was a brand new game. :)

That's actually why I asked lol.... when I got back into morrowind I opted for the PC version instead of ordering goty for xbox and I've been loving it. Any idea if stores still carry it or will I need to find it online?

Also if I buy online I've heard some versions can't be modded?

I recommend the pc version, because any bugs that come with the xbox/ps3 version you're stuck with but on pc you can find patches that fix them. On top of this, players have created mods for all sorts - adding new castles/towns/safehouses to improving customisation of characters. It's much more fun for pc, and you can take screenshots.

My copy is PC GOTY on disk. I've no experience with the various download versions. That said, I recall that there are or at least were a couple of download versions that could not be modded. D2D comes to mind, or was it DirectDrive? Bah! So far as I know the Steam version mods just fine. Seems like it requires extra steps when installing OBSE (which many mods require) but even that is pretty cut-and-dry so long as you follow instructions. I believe disk versions of PC GOTY (maybe in 5th Anniversary form) are still in stores.

Do yourself a favor whether you opt for disk or download and DO NOT install the game in the default Program Files location. That's asking for trouble, and easily avoided. Instead install it somewhere like C:\games or D:\games or wherever. (This assumes your OS is either Windows Vista or 7.)

PC most definitely. At first I planned to stay away from mods, but now I'm obsessed - they can change up your gameplay, make it more refreshing!

I picked up my copy from eBay earlier this year, and have had no complaints.

I'll see if I can find it in stores and if not getting the discs online should be easy enough. Thanks all!

Direct2Drive (usually abbreviate D2D) was incompatible with OBSE, and so a lot of mods wouldn't work with it. It wasn't completely incompatible with mods, just the better ones!

Steam version works fine with mods, just have to launch it from the Steam client for OBSE to work. Also remember to get the Deluxe GOTY as the ordinary GOTY dosn't include all the DLC
