Is my computer able to run Oblivion?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:02 am

I'm not talking ultra high graphics over here, I only want to know if it has the capability to be able to run it. Here are my computer specifications for you:

Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.87 Ghz
Ram: 3 GB ram
Sound:no problems here.

Sorry for the incredibly vague details, but for some reason I can't copy and paste on these forums.

You should be fine. Oblivion is a six-year-old game. Almost any computer made in the last six years should run Oblivion. Heck, in 2006 I ran Oblivion on a computer that I built in 2004, without any problems.

What graphics card or chipset are you using. That is the most important feature.

My computer is

AMD Athlon (II) x2 260 processor 3.20 Ghz
2x2Gb gaming DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5450
Window 7

Can run the game well, i can set up to maximum graphic with only little/some lags in some part especially outside building scenery where there are a lot of grass, but if set 800x600 resolution the game is smooth, 600x450 resolution the game is smoother. No anti-aliasing anyway.

I also download Operation Optimization mod and grass mod (don't remember) to reduce FPS

Now i just set up the graphic to medium for smoother playing, with little tweaking

I can't copy and paste on these forums.
The trick I use is to type in two temporary letters. I place my cursor in between these letters and copy/paste. Then I then delete the temporary letters. There's probably other methods too but this one is simple and it works for me.

I tried running the game today, for the most part it seemed fine, but it then it just crashed to my desktop and gave me that usual "Don't send" error. I'm on Windows XP.

No way to stop it however there are tips.

If you get a CTD from entering a specific area, don't enter it for 3 ingame days. That'll give the Cell time to reset.

Other than that, use multiple saves often and you'll be fine. Personally I used F5 (Quick save) but its risky in case of corruption. But I also had many bug fixing mods.

Lol, I didn't even start the game yet. It gives me this error whenever I try to run the game. Maybe I'll just stick to playing Morrowind for now.

When using mods a crash before the game initializes is typically the symptom of a missing a master file. Many mods have dependencies on other mods. If one of those mods is not enabled the game will not load.

So the first thing you should try is to disable all your mods and start a brand new character. If you can get as far as the screen with the map and buttons for "New" and "Load," ect, then you know you have a mod problem. I or somebody else here can most likely help you with that.

If the game will not start with no mods enabled then you should start a thread in the Oblivion Hardware and Software forum. You either have a faulty game install or you have a hardware problem of some kind. Those folks over there are experts in those areas and they can help you with either of those problems.

I'll try re-installing it and following your instructions this time. I'll reply back in some time to tell you if it worked or not.

Tried what? Disabling your mods and creating a new character? Didn't work how, exactly? A little more information than three words would be helpful.

At any rate I'm guessing maybe you might have a hardware problem of some kind (it's impossible to know without info). So I guess your best bet would be to post your problem over in the Hardware forum.

Read the post right before it, then you'll understand. Also, I'm pretty sure that it's not a hardware problem.

what did you do before the crashes started (update hardware drivers etc)?
if you updated hardware drivers you might try reinstalling the last ones you where using just in case it's a buggy driver issue.
i've ran into those before.

It's okay, I finally realised what seemed to be the problem. My computer can't run it, turns out I don't have a video card and I just need to buy a new one off of Amazon. But all of the hardware that's initially present in my computer's completely fine.

I personally wouldnt bother to upgrade that aging system. The Pentium 4 line of processors are pretty outdated right now. Any modern graphics card you buy will be severely bottlenecked by the CPU. If you would like, we can offer suggestions on new systems to buy or, if you want, components that would go together for you to build yourself.

if your pc has a pci-e 16x slot this video card might be your best bet and it shouldn't bottleneck your system http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130644
