big quest mods performance hit

I've got a very heavily modded setup running smoothly, Data folder is 22 gb. I'm getting another 4 gigs of ram in a few days so it'll be 8 gigs soon.


I wanted to add the big quest mods like Windfall, Integration, Reclaiming Sancre Tor, Gates to Aesgaard etc. and I'm worried about overloading my system.


so what do the experts think? would say, 10 big quest mods bring the system to its knees?


i5-2430m (3.0 ghz) , 8 gigs ram ddr3 1333 mhz, radeon 6770m (2 gigs vram ddr5)

Most quest mods keep heavy hardware resource use well-isolated to their own locations and scenes, so they aren't likely to push your system on their own. What will push your system is running lots of them in conjunction with lots of other mods that add to the resource load in a more constant fashion, such as high-poly/high-rez body mesh/tex replacers, overhauls that add more creatures/NPCs, LOD/VWD detail mods, OBGE, etc. For example, encountering one of RST's well-cluttered villages with a Unique Landscapes module still in view as well as a dozen spawned creatures from FCOM, and all of that using high-rez textures and near a lake with OBGE liquid water. In situations like that, you may see mild spikes where the mods intersect location-wise. That said, unless you just like to frolic about aimlessly in your very pretty Cyrodiil, the quest mods are what's going to really extend the play time of your saves, add depth to your characters, and make your playthroughs a more personal and unique experience, so get them anyway. With your hardware, you probably don't have much to worry about.

I would, however, recommend only adding and playing through one or two at a time. Some of them you may not see a need to keep installed once completed, and some of them conflict with each other but only during certain quest stages, etc... and you'll get too engrossed in the one you're playing to worry about the others anyhow. If you're considering Ayleid Steps (and you should be, it's brilliant!), install that one early as its story develops slowly and over game weeks. It's a fun one to play alongside others, and conflicts are minimal.

thanks for the thourough answer, you have a good point: I DO love wandering through pretty Cyrodiil like a drooling idiot, but I suppose something to DO would be welcome :biggrin:

with performance in mind, so far I have avoided RAEWVD, Better Cities, body replacers and OBGE. I am running QTP3 Redimized + Bomrets, but with 2gb VRAM there should be no issues. I also have All Natural fog, and use slightly reduced spawns for FCOM and NO MMM more wilderness wildlife ( since WAC already adds more than enough spawn points )



I'd really love to also add Better Cities to be honest, but I'm afraid that might become overkill..

Those pretty much are the older quest mods. Thievery in particular being the earliest from like june 2006. I could list some other good ones, but they kind of depend on the playstyle/morality.

Blackwood Company
Dremora Companion
and
Servant of the Dawn
are good, but all fairly evil with the exception Blackwood company where you have the option of playing somewhat nice. Only issue is Servant of the Dawn kills off a village when you reach a certain point (you kill the village), and it screws up Ocato so you can't talk to him. Blackwood Company is somewhat buggy; it doesn't really cause issues outside of the quests, it's just some can get screwed up and become hard to complete.

Thieves Arsenal is incomplete. The arrows and stuff are awesome, but the first real quest is broken and you can never complete it. You can do the 'radiant' dungeon stealth missions however

Thievery in Imperial City, and Malevolent end in cliff hangers and likely will never be completed.

Also there's this part from my copy/paste. It goes over most of the quest mods I've played with short few sentence reviews. Don't automatically think a mod is bad just because I did like it, just some things to look out for:

The ones you listed are all pretty good, and high quality. I might not love all of them but that's more opinion. It all depends on what you want dungeon crawling, or character interaction? Combat or riddles? camp or serious? That sort of stuff. All the mods mentioned are very good, with just a few issues.

What I mean is old/new doesn't matter much, what matters is how good the modder was and how much effort they put in. There really haven't been any drastic discoveries that changed quest mods dramatically for the better over time.

Dibella's Watch is awesome. Kind of Windfall-ish with new world/new quests to immerse yourself in.

Agreed, Dibella's Watch is an excellent choice. If you're going to get Verona House Bloodlines (and you should, the story is beautiful), grab the http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=36389 by Arthmoor.

yep, that's the version I was planning to get :)

I'm also going to add Arthmoor's villages, hopefully another 9 towns scattered around the place will be fine too :D
