Restarting Fallout 3 again. Tips and refresherments please.

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 2:11 pm

Hello all, been playing alot of New Vegas, and then Skyrim alot lately. Time for a break so going to start Fallout 3 again from the begining.

Not sure what to do, will try and roll play a bit, and see how long I can last without dieing. Will not do a Dead is Dead, tried it with Skyrim and one of the reasons why I need to take a break from Skyrim, tired of restarting all the time lol.

So since it's been a few years since I played Fallout 3, and since I played lots of New Vegas, what are the differences again I might be shocked at with Fallout 3 that is different from New Vegas and Skyrim? If I remember correctly I don't have to eat food, or drink water in F3. What other differences are there?

I can't remember but I think I min/maxed my stats so I can carry the most and have either lots of points or not alot of points for level up to distribute when I level up. What is the funnest way for you when you play? Do you min/max and if do, where do you put your points? I don't think I will do the River City run from the begining, that is the only thing I remember. Other than that I only remember bits and pieces of the game so should be a new experinace again.

I am playing on the 360, so no mods for me. Just looking for new tips while I redownload all the DLC and the game to my HDD.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer if you do. :fallout:

*edit* I see there is a new update since I last played. Does anyone know where I can go to read what the latest update entails?

FO3: Perks every level vs NV every other level..
FO3; perks can be hidden skill increases instead of actual perks.. (thief etc, daddy's boy/girl etc.)
FO3: like skyrim, especialy if you own Broken Steel, is more or less a free-roam action game with RPG elements... (NV puts much more emphasis on classic RPG elements)
If you RP.. i would do the quests as follws:
MQ + sidequests: Untill the waters of life..
do DLC.
Start with the Pitt, story wise the most interesting, decent rewards
Then: either Mothership Z.. or Point Lookout (depending on build)
Then finish MQ + Broken Steel
edit (apart from a typo, an adding nuance
I believe 1.5 is the last and latest update..
See the sticky posts by Gstaff in your platforms technical forum.
The GOTY version might have added a small update but other than probably adding stability doesn't alter anything.

1.7 is the most recent patch, and to my knowledge it adds achievements for Mothership Zeta. Not sure what else it does, if anything.

Here are some tips from an experienced Fallout fan and whose favorite game so far is Fallout 3. :fallout:

-If you played as a male most of the time try playing as a female.
-If you played as an evil character try playing as a good or neutral character.
-Try to mix up your tag skills some.
-If you blew up Megaton try saving it.
-If you like helping people try killing them.

My point is what ever you did the first time around of second try doing the opposite. I will impact the game dramaticly!

I am also playing Fallout 3 for the first time in a long while so I know how you feel.

I have started FO3 again recently myself, but the only thing that keeps me playing is the RP element, the character writing just annoys me constantly as well as the shallownes of the world in general. But anyways, I'd suggest as dramatic changes to your usual gameplay as possible, it can make things interesting. And if you like exploration, explore. And to that min/max, I maxed science at.. umm.. level 4-7, can't remember exact level.

Thanks guys for the tips. Greatly appreciated. I have taken some advice. For some reason, I just can't play an evil character, but will do things I haven't done before. I wasn't much a thief and hardly ever stold or broke into homes. I think I will be doing this in this game. I don't think I will kill everyone as suggested, but I did what was said, I killed my first person, against my character, but I think I already am on the path to the Dark Side LOL. So much for not killing when I shoudln't. I feel bad a bit, but my thievy side likes the loot I got.

The game is really feeling different now and REFRESHING. I am a little shocked on how the characters or NPC look so much nicer than Skyrim. (but that is for another topic).

Thanks guys. Feels a bit wierd not drinking or eating. LOL.I just can't be bothered to roll play the eating/drinking part aspect not finding it any fun. I do keep a cup with me to drink out of the fire hydrants. Forgot I can do that LOL. So no more do I feel like I am laping water out of a fire hydrant like a dog LOL. Damn, now to find a fork and knife so I am not eating with my fingers all the time when I do eat lol.

Don't know your platform, but in my sig is a bunch of hardcoe rules that we all contributed to to attempt a mod for consoles. I don't play the game so much as more use the game as a vehicle for advancing different levels of enemies, for a particular RP. I am playing a different character as well as my main, in the DiD thread, but that's another story.

I've found it hard to RP in this game as opposed to say, Oblivion, where I have two characters at the moment. It feels more survivaly, is that a word? I'm not sure if FO3 was the beginning of the degeneration of choice in Bethesda games, but that's another story.

By using the ideas from the hardcoe thread, like gimping the character's END and perks, I am able to extend my gameplay by keeping that feeling of survival at costs throughout all levels of the game, instead of just like the first 6 levels or so. Good luck and welcome back!

FO3 hardcoe really gives the game a fresh experience for us console users.

Yes, we all agreed that we wanted our own mods, this mod will break if you lack willpower though. I stopped playing for over a year until I started fleshing out my own story within the hardcoe rules.

I tried playing DiD in Skyrim, don't care for it, so will not be doing that in my game. I just died and no way am I starting over now. :P I will be taking the other advice. I tried the no hud, don't like it. Guess I am use to it and need the cross hairs espically since we have no iron sites for the guns.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

I would say.

Find places in advance.
Enjoy the fact you can kill almost every single person, all the time.
Hoard any nuka cola quantum you find. There is a quest for them.
And ignore the stupid MQ.
Just go straight to the Jefferson Memorial or Smith Caseys Garage.
Don't let the moronic hypocrite 3 Dog mess you around.
That way, you only help him if you want to. And don't have to say stupid whiney, sickening lines about James the moron.
Get the annoying bobblehead and behemoth trophies as fast as you can.
Blow up everything you can! It's fun!
Be good if you are usually evil or bad if you are usually good, to vary it, if you want. But do what you feel like.

I'm currently playing a Texas Ranger type character, just taking my time roaming the wasteland with Ol' Painless, looking for raiders as my main priority. I find that if you take your time, the wasteland becomes a kind of zen experience as you let its atmosphere absorb you.

I too have restarted Fallout 3 thought with extensive mods. Namely, my Fallout 3 has all the features New Vegas has ranging from iron sights to hardcoe mode and 100 other little things.

But for a console user.....

I say just shoot three dog.
Also, limit your playing. Low intelligence, no skill point perks, carry only two or three weapons at once, take reasonable amounts of ammo... you know.

Get a sniper rifle, find a large-scale raider camp.
Most fun moment in the game so far.

Dead is Dead. If your character dies, you will abandon him and start over.

Return to Fallout 3
