Game of the Year Edition Crashes ("Fallout 3 Has Stopped

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 11:08 am

Ok so im trying to complete all this but its giving me an error when i try to move steam apps by saying its open or in use in another location
i have closed out everything and have not been able to move it
also looked for the bUseThreadedAl=0 in fallout 3 and there is no file named Fallout.ini in that folder i searched it and got files named FALLOUT and FalloutPrefs inside those files the closest name is bUseThreadedblood and gore im not that computer savy one would say but i know how to navigate through files just not having any luck at all

nvm found the bUseThreadedAl gonna try that now

Im really not familar with the steam app since I dont use it. But if your haveing trouble moveing it and cant find a solution on their site.
I would try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Besides even after moveing it , you might still have to reinstall FO3 to get it to work properly.
If you dont have alot of games through steam , I would definately just start with a fresh slate. Hunt around for all traces of both apps after your uninstalls. Dont forget about Microsoft Games for Windows Live also wich the FO3 GOTY edition uses and has an XLive.dll that launching the game requires. However you shouldnt need to actually use it.

By the way ... If your logging into a Live account when starting FO3 ... the save files will be inside of a folder named the same as your account name. And the FALLOUT.INI you need to edit will be inside of there. But after a reinstall , and if you dont use a Live account , not useing it will give you less problems imo.

Anyways , before I go off rambeling to much , come back with an update on your situation (whats the game doing , what fixes have you tried)
Post a dxdiag , and explain any history you have with Steam and Microsoft Games for Windows Live , so we can rule out or give a better direction for you to try.

Yeah the same thing happened to me. i was playing FO 3 GOTY just fine then one day i went into it, was at my saved game loading screen then just as its about to spawn in the game crashes. (it was a clean FO 3 install no mods had touched it yet) then i started a new game it was fine, saved, loaded and crash. now i cant start a new game. everytime im about to load in it crashed. reinstalled 3 times nothing. Fallout new vegas runs beautifly with 20 plus intereface mods lol. *facepalm*

Sorry, but if you do not have a real video card from a real 3D graphics company, you are out of luck. Intel has never produced game-capable video. If that is a normal desktop, you need a Mainline Geforce or Radeon graphics card for it.

hate to say it but your wrong mate my friend has this game on a laptop with terrible specs and it works fine because it's a disk so sorry to say people but its probably a dodgy download however i mighty wrong i am currently talking to the tec support atm so if i get a solution i will let you know but if you are new here and thinking about buying fallout DON'T DOWNLOAD IT

Fallout was designed to run on a proper DESKTOP computer, not any kind of disposable, portable, tinker toy. THERE IS NO SUPPORT as soon as you tell them you have anything other than a DESKTOP.

Minimum System Requirements:

* Windows XP/Vista
* 1GB System RAM (XP)/ 2GB System RAM (Vista)
* 2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 256MB RAM
(NVIDIA 6800 "GS" or better/ ATI X850 or better)
{Added my note here, the X800 Pro & up also, and
avoid the Geforce 6800 SE, and 6800 XT}
* 4.6 GBs of free hard drive space

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem.
I have the DVD version (not Steam) and the game crashes to desktop after I select 'New Game'. I have looked high and low on the internet for a solution to this problem and I've tried everything (editing .ini files, installing latest patch, updating drivers/Games for Windows), to no avail. I'd just like someone to tell me why I can't run this game so I can get my money back.

If Intel's horrible excuse for graphics is the best you can do, you need another game.

The minimum is a real, actual, discrete card from a company that understands 3D graphics. Intel does not, and hasn't produced a real card in 14 years.

I've been have the same problem with fallout 3 (steam edition), yes I do have a intel hd 3000 card (which I know is made of sh*t)
but yet I can run new vegas and skyrim just fine, I can understand skyrim running because it uses a different engine, but new vegas uses the same engine a FO3 but yet it runs fine, someone please explain
I'd given up on running FO3, but now with NV working, I'm having another go at it

I got it working shortly after my last post!
For some reason, the d3d9.dll file I dropped into the Fallout 3 game folder wasn't doing it's job, so I went to another website (Fallout Nexus) and downloaded the file again. Re-installed Fallout 3 and cut the file in again and it worked!
Can someone tell me what this file actually does? It's a miracle.

um, I have the steam version, but I tried doing what you did and I ran into several problems

1: there is no file named d3d9.dll or d3dx9.dll on fallout nexus (I got my copy off of dll-files.com)

2: where did you put your d3d9.dll file? (I put mine in the main folder)

did you mean to say d3dx9.dll because that would be something to do with directx, because when I go into the directx folder inside of the fallout folder I see a lot of files named d3dx9

That's where I got mine. I put it in the same folder as fallout3.exe (Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Bethesda Softworks > Fallout 3)

Word of warning when using this workaround.

Watch your heat levels. and the moment you start getting getting any graphics glitches or artefacting, close down the game and let things cool off.

Forcing a game to run on hardware it was never intended to do so on is a good way of causing some damage. The sort that companies love because it's caused by YOU doing something YOU probably ought not to have been. Just take it carefully and you 'should' be okay for the short term. Long term look at upgrading to something capable, that won't end up with a melted lump of plastic that used to be a graphics processor (Bit of an exageration, but in this case treat it as if the worse case scenario is a likely prospect) Those on older chipsets would be well advised not to risk it.

Also, for those that do try it, don't expect a playable framerate on anything but the newer Intel models.

As for why Fallout 3 won't run on an Intel and Skyrim and NV will? The shaders seems to be the cause. The Fallout 3 shaders required support greater than what the Intels were capable of. Intel appartently 'fake' anything above Shader Support 2.0 via the drivers rather than actually building the hardware to support it. Fallout 3 isn't fooled by the driver based support and thus crashes. For New Vegas and Skyrim, the shaders were actually a lot more Intel friendly and may have been scaled back a tad.

One of the reasons you are having a problem is that the game is installed in the Program Files. Uninstall the game and re-install in a location outside the program files. All of the fixes have been discussed previously in this forum. A little research goes a long way.

Word of warning when using this workaround.

Watch your heat levels. and the moment you start getting getting any graphics glitches or artefacting, close down the game and let things cool off.

yeah, I got it working using this work around, and I noticed my laptop's fans immediately started working overtime, so thanks for the heads up

if the intel hd 3000 card is part of the cpu, if it starts to overheat, I assume that would damage the cpu as well, so another reason to be careful

yeah, it runs fine until it randomly freezes and then I have to force quit out of it

thanks for the infodump on why FO3 won't run but skyrim and FO:NV will

too bad getting a better system is probably not in my future, as I'm in high school and living with my parents

I am having the same issue but instead of crashing after pressing new game it crashes as soon as i launch the game. Im using the same hardware as the last guy. Plz add some input considering I've been struggling with this damn software for two straight days after downloading it from gamestop.

try doing what Star Paladin did, download the d3d9.dll file, and put it into your main fallout 3 folder, that might get it to work, if it does work make sure you don't melt your "graphics card"/cpu (I'll assume you're using a integrated intel cpu/"graphics card") and start saving money for a computer that actually has separate graphics card (I know I am)
