I had a hell of a time installing on Vista. For some reason the copy protection on the disc really messes with it, sometimes setup would crash, or it would fail to copy files completely.

If you get the "could not load text/fonts" even when your fallout2.cfg has the correct paths in it, then your master.dat/critter.dat is screwed up. I suppose it's possible for other files to be mangled too, but those are the biggest. Problem is, Vista can't read those files off my CD to copy them manually or create an .iso image either.

Best bet is to install on a non-Vista machine and then copy it over, the game is self-contained in its own folder.

Hmm. Don't know then, maybe it's my CD drive. I'm on Vista64 as well, but twice ended up with a master.dat that was ~240mb instead of the correct 325mb. Luckily I had an old installed copy from 5 years ago, just yanked the .dat files out of it so I could start clean with the modern patches.

Still, if one computer is tempermental it's worth a shot using a different machine.

Yea I just installed Fallout 2 on Vista 64 bit two days ago, I notice a lot of people do have issues installing but I never did. Stuck the cd in, didn't have to do compatibility mode or anything worked great. I do have newer disks though, I purchased them I believe just a few years ago at Walmart for $10 in the old games spot(Came with Fallout 1 and 2). Sounds like the disk you have is corrupt or scratched or something if its not installing correct file sizes.

THANK YOU. I've been looking for a good deal on Fallout 2. I have never played any of the original Fallout games, and Fallout 2 looked like a good way to get into it (fixed inventory and AI issues, etc). I never even heard of this site before. 6 bucks for a no-hassle way of playing Fallout 2? That price is a STEAL. In under 2 minutes I purchased the game and began downloading.
