Your horse will fast travel with you. If you fast travel to a city gate, you will get a message saying the horse has been stabled outside the gate. Look outside the gate or at the local stables to find it.

If you lose the horse, fasttravel to a safe, non-city gate place (a stables or small settlement is good). Your horse should fast travel and appear with you at your new destination.

When you fast travel, your horse travels to the same location. It doesn't matter where you both start- if you leave your horse at the Imperial City and walk to Bravil, then fast travel to a dungeon near Anvil, your horse will appear outside that dungeon with you.

Now, that horse can get killed by anything in the wilderness that can kill you- but that's somewhat separate from the fast travel issue, and a reason to keep an eye on the immediate area. ;)

EDIT: Hehehe... :ninja:-ed as always.

Also: unless the encounter happens just as you enter or exit a dungeon, your horse seems to be safe from random spawns while you are inside a location. In short, you can leave him anywhere and he should be safe, most of the time.

Once when I came out of Pale Pass after spending a couple days in there camped, I noticed there was a dead Imp and my horse had a little bit of health lost, so I guess he can get attacked while you are away. But it seems to happen very rarely, and I've never in ~400 hours of play, using horses very often, left my horse parked outside, and come back to find him dead.

don't buy horses, just steal them :whistling:

edit: once you mount the horse, the horse automaticly thinks your his owner and wil follow you aswel.

If you are on the back of a stolen horse, it will fast travel with you. When you hop off a stolen horse however, the stolen horse will wander back to his 'home' with one exception. If the stolen horse is a Bay (including the Legion ones), then when you hop off the stolen horse, it will just stand where you got off and not wander away.

If you want to steal a horse, a low level command creature spell is very handy for leading the horse away from prying eyes. Then sneak and mount the horse from behind (silly as it seems, the horse you are stealing can report you for stealing it if it sees you do so).

The act of hopping on ANY horse, will cause the horse you own to figure you don't want it and it will wander home (like to the stables where you bought it) and possibly be killed during the journey. If the horse successfully makes it back to the stables, it will just stay there. It will still be your horse, but it will not fast travel with you. You can get your horse to resume its normal behaviour by simply mounting it.

On the PC, you can get a mod called http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3861 that will give you a quest arrow to the last horse you rode.

Heh, don't feel bad. :) There is plenty of stuff about horses that doesn't exactly make sense. :P
