Wait a second... the Elder Scrolls are from EARTH?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:18 am

I was just looking at the descriptions of the Elder Scrolls on UESP. Apparently, if you know anything about astronomy, you can recognize the patterns in the in-game Elder Scrolls as constellations from Earth's southern Hemisphere.

This is true for the scroll in Oblivion, as well as the one from Skyrim, apparently.

Is that odd? I mean, I understand the difficulty in creating a random pattern that looks sufficiently mystical to represent an Elder Scroll, but we've seen them do it before. They have created constellations for all of Nirn's birthsigns, plus the Mysterium Xarxes had random "mystic looking" pages that weren't based on anything from Earth.

Thoughts on this? Is there a reason the Elder Scrolls are based on Earth astronomy? Are the developers trying to pull some Star Ocean thing where they, themselves, represent the pantheon of the game universe?

That would be simultaneously so very awesome and extremely lame.

Fits in with CHIM as "realising you are in a video game" interpretation.

They're the trillions of outcomes of your save games, so, yes, they are from good ol' Earth.

A: Never trust UESP

B: No, it's not from Earth. As much as I hate to use external explanations, stars always give designers trouble.

It's just the devs getting lazy and using Earth constellations instead of Nirn constellations. Or it's a reference to CHIM and stuffs.

Group the First: The Naifs
For one who has received no training in the history or nature of the Elder Scrolls, the scroll itself is, effectively, inert. No prophecy can be scried nor knowledge obtained. While the scroll will not impart learning to the uninformed, nor will it afflict them in any adverse fashion. Visually, the scroll will appear to be awash in odd lettering and symbols. Those who know their astronomy often claim to recognize constellations in the patterns and connections, but such conjecture is impossible to further investigate since the very nature of this study necessitates unlearned subjects.

Yes. In all my maps, there's a South American continent named Tamriel.

Just because it's set on an 'Earth', doesn't mean it's OUR Earth. It's their Earth.

I've seen TV shows and read webcomics that were set on an Earth that looked nothing like ours.

But at any rate: The planet the series takes place on is Nirn, not Earth.
