Chameleon effects - what do they do?

I know that 100% chameleon = invisible without the activation ending the effect, but what effect do the lesser percentages have on your character? Particularly during combat, is it any different to Sanctuary?

From the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Chameleon:

Causes the target to become partially transparent and blend into the background for the duration of the spell. The Magnitude is the degree of transparency. 100% Chameleon is equivalent to Invisibility, making you completely undetectable. Unlike Invisibility, however, Chameleon is not cancelled when you activate objects, so you can attack people, grab items, open doors, and whatever else you want to do without the spell dissipating. Your detectability is also greatly affected by your Sneak skill while using Chameleon. The greater your Sneak skill, the less Chameleon you will need to be unseen. (Note that you must actually be sneaking for the Sneak skill to have any effect.)

Basically it helps you remain unseen when you sneak

Edit: During combat, chameleon's particularly useless as sanctuary makes it harder to be hit with attacks and chameleon just makes you opaque.

Yeah. Once you've been noticed, Chameleon is no good anymore. It doesn't even affect like Sanctuary.

Chameleon is a very powerful stealth tool, because it doesn't cancel the moment you do anything but move. It's not a combat effect, though.

No, 100% chameleon keeps you invisible during combat too. I have a ring with 100% chameleon for 24 seconds and my character is a Terminator.

Chameleon is very useful in combat. At 80%, I've had enemies run around looking for me while I'm giving them constant damage. They may turn around and land one hit, but then they go off and look for me again.

Ah, fair enough. It sounds like Chameleon needs to be strong in order to have any effect in combat, but is useful for sneaking. Thanks for the advice, guys!

Actually, I've had the problem where enemies can't find you, and start running around and then running off (happened to my character frequently in Mournhold). Meanwhile, you're still "in combat" 2 minutes later, but with no sign of the opponent, so you can't repair or do other tasks that aren't allowed in combat. Finally, they show up again, and by that time the effect has probably worn off, so you end up finishing the fight or recasting the spell. It ended up being more annoying and stupid than "effective", in my opinion.

Well you get a sneak attack that does quadruple damage. If they are surviving that, just add “paralyze on strike” or cast a strong burden spell with short time effect. You might even summon something for them to play with while you pound them into dog food.
