Dragons and combat

Post » Sat Nov 21, 2009 5:55 am

So dragons are implied, to me at least, to be very large. So how does combat work with them?

Will it be like slashing at Dagon's foot? Quirky, not fun, and miserable in implementation.
Or does facing such a foe mean we will see an interesting and drastic change to the combat systerm?
Or does it simply mean they are going to be small, small like a cliff racer for instance? *Shudders*

I think Bethesda would see an issue with using essentially the same combat system against a foe that for purposes of this thread are assumed to be quite large...

We can't say for sure. The imagery in the video says "DRAGONS BE COMIN'" but alas, the dialogue cannot refer to dragons (as they were neither defeated, nor is their existence disputed).

It's more likely that the Dragon is a symbol for something else.

QUICK TIME EVENTS, AAWWWW YEAH.

I really liked the cyclops fight in Dark Messiah and it was basically hacking at its feet until it brought its head closer to the ground.

If I see dragons the size of a human, and only that size, I'll be disappointed.
But if I see huge dragons with oblivion combat (not to knock it, although it needs improving, it just wouldn't work) I might cry...

I wouldn't discount the possibility, but Bethesda isn't known for its simple hints. Could be more cryptic.

Look up the High Dragon encounter in Dragon Age: Origins, it'll probably be something similar

It's hard to say without seeing the combat system. I'd say they will be large enemies. Maybe the PC will fight them with a group of allies and deliver the real damage/ get the Dragonborn up close.

i hope it has semi dynamic animations or something.

it shouldent just stand there while i wack it while the computer decides to do move 2c, it should try to move its legs away from your sword while trying to lift its head around its body to bite you. or maybe it should kick you away, perhaps if you get behind it it will swing its tail, and if your attack does not relent it might jump to a point where it can attack you from a distance- most importantly it should try to attack from the air by either fire or scoping you up in its claws/teeth

Doesn't get any more definitive than that I suppose. :P

I imagine that we players are going to have to be a bit more reliant on our marksmen and magical skills when dealing with the great winged beasts than we've been used to thus far in fighting the more difficult-to-slay enemies of previous games.

And to the thought of them all being small: Nothing a little Construction Set work can't fix.

And this is why I'm not convinced by the whole "Skyrims are the antagonists of Skyrim!" thing, because it seems obvious that the ones who are supposed to return, according to the dialog in the trailer, are NOT dragons, and it seems highly unlikely that whoever they are, they would NOT be the main enemies in the game. Not to say that I deny dragons will exist in the game, if Bethesda says they will, I wouldn't doubt they'll be there, I just doubt they'll be the main antagonists, but that still doesn't mean that we won't get to fight them, even if we maybe don't HAVE to to complete the main quest. And as to how fighting them will work, I really don't know. I'm sure they'll be big, of course, how big? I can't say, maybe similar in size to the Gate Keeper? It's impossible to say, but I highly doubt they'll be only human sized. And it is true that the combat system in Oblivion, or the one in Morrowind, for that matter, does not really handle extremely large foes that well, but since we know nothing about the combat system of Skyrim at this time, we can't be sure yet whether it will be better or not. So I'd say we just have to wait, and see.

I think it's safe to say, though, that we won't see Shadow of the Collossus style fights against dragons, at least, considering that ALL the combat in that game is against foes much larger than the player, and a large part of the appeal of it comes from how well it handles such fights, but in Skyrim, I'm sure most of the combat will be against enemies of similar size to the player, so it probably can't put nearly as much focus on that sort of thing.

If we fight dragons, they'll be huge like Jyggalag or Karstaag, maybe even as big as Dagon...But will they fly during combat? Thats the real question.

If dragons do appear, I doubt you'll be the one fighting them, just like in Oblivion with Dagon, you don't accomplish anything by pricking his toes with your sword.

I'm confused by this

ALSO BoSStealthAgent
I killed Dagon in Oblivion, I watched him do this weird melting thing, made me laugh, and then AFTER I killed him Martin still had to kill him :P but it was funny anyway.

I really don't want some stupid "tap X, now push Y, now A" and a cinematic playing If i get it right type thing, It wouldn't be TES. I'd rather just hack at its massive feet and pretend it really really hurts.
or maybe we'll get to blow fire at them to :)

It will be like puzzle boss battle. You are hiding or running away from the dragon while dispatching smaller sized minion, trying to delay/hinder the dragon with various way (destroy pillar to block the way, activating traps/device , etc) so you can buy time for the chekov gun to seal/finish it, or guiding it to the ultimate boss-finishing trap, etc. Get caught by dragon will be instant death. It will be better if warrior, magical, stealth or even diplomat character have different way to win this boss battle by using their speciallities.

I'm kinda hoping for Zelda-like combat.

Y'know, there's these big honkin' boss monsters, and you play as a squishy little meatbag who mostly gets his ass handed to him. Except, the dragon has one or two weak spots (I'm thinking inside of the mouth- at least when there's no fire coming out of it! And probably the eyes).

Target the weak spot for massive damage, lather, rinse, repeat.

V.A.T.S. S.C.A.T.S. (SCroll Assisted Targeting System) would be a useful gameplay addition in such a case.
