This is what is missing from modern games!

I'm a fan of Oblivion and Fallout and recently I put Skyrim on hold after figuring it would be more fun if I waited for more patches and the toolset... So I decided to finally tackle an oldie I heard much about but to my great shame had never actually played.

So I installed Morrowind GOTY, the patches, the official plugins and the amazing graphic overhaul 2.0 from KINGPIX without which this game's visuals would be too offputting... and I embarked on an incredibly epic journey. I wanted to post here to say I -LOVE- the old school, no-holding-your-hand approach to Morrowind and miss it sorely from modern games. As I carefully explore the countryside I know I cant just fast travel back to town anytime its convenient and so preparation and careful training matters. You start out WEAK and have to bribe people for them to even look at you, and that rocks!! None of this "kill dragons straight out of the newbie dungeon" stuff!

But what rocked my boat is that at level 6 I just went back to the first village and heard about an Imperial ruin overran by skeletons and the Ward of Akavir. Boldly, I decided to go and with the little group of adventurers managed to crawl all the way to the depth of this combat-intensive ruin... only to get two-shotted several times in a row by an insanely powerful lich I can't manage to scratch! YESSS!! What happened to the Kangaxx's of this world?! Nowadays games are designed so you can kill anything you see just rushing in :(

Seems like there's alot more in Morrowind than I ever expected, and I'm having a blast. And now, I have a goal: to return to the depths of Firemoth, avenge my fallen companions and reclaim an artefact from the first challenging foe an RPG has thrown at me in years.

I hope they make games like this again someday.

PS. Bound dagger rocks in this game! As a Breton with Conjuration and Small swords as major skills, I dont even want to carry normal weapons XD
I agree with your points, when I first started playing Skyrim I thought it was pretty sweet but that soon wore off when I couldn't even walk into town without hearing all these stories from people and then getting quests without even initiating anything to signal that I was interested in what that person had to say....I mean really? I love the Graphics in Skyrim but for me it just feels to much like a GTA/COD type game and that is not what I was expecting at all from Bethesda.
I just recently started playing Morrowind again myself and I have to say I am enjoying myself immensely, this is most definitely my type of RPG...old-school is the winner in my book :).

Yup. Plus the game feels like "completed" pretty quickly, too quickly for a Beth RPG. I've never "finished" any other Beth game, but Skyrim only in mere weeks. It boiled down to be a very shallow experience after all that gives you the same quests with same conclusions over and over. And yeah, it truly gives them. No thinking needed, not even -- as you said -- interest for those quests. You still get them, and then you do them or you do not. I'm counting it more towards an action game than a role-playing game, too, at least given to its contents and playability. I enjoy the dynamic side of Skyrim, graphics and playability, but that's about it. I was very hyped up at first but it quickly died after a two-digit number of hours played as I began to see how very linear the game is compared to earlier titles. You just can't do anything about it; everyone seems to think that this kind of games are in for the best sells right now, and they might be right. :/

(Why do I get the feeling I say these same things in every topic around here nowadays? :D Again not trying to be elitist or anything, just giving away my two cents. Not that anyone should care. :P)

Right. The problem I, too, have with Skyrim is that it shoves quests down my throat. Some quests, anyway. No, I'm not talking of the Fornsworn one. Those were very nice.

Skyrim should have been a slower pace, not that it isn't fine the way it is, but I prefer that kind of games. Tood said that each TES game is it's own game, so I won't whine too much about this. In fact, I am glad that TES games differ so much in gameplay, unlike ...y'know, other games.

This topic is the reason I turned from a lurker to a registered user. ;)

It's been all said above, I would only add this: I believe that is should be mandatory for every single aspiring game designer to spend at least a solid weak playing Morrowind before they are allowed to even think about creating a cRPG. This is the golden standard, people.
