I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this by the old school fans, but I would also give Fallout Tactics a try if your planning on playing the first two as well.

I know Tactics doesn't get much praise from the Fallout followers, but I was never much of a gamer until I joined the service and needed a diversion on weekends not spent deployed or in the field (Jacksonville, NC did not in my opinion offer much of a night life, unless you plan on giving away numerous one dollar bills). Anyway one of the first games I picked up for new sanity inspiring PC was Fallout Tactics. I loved it and it turned me on to both Fallout 1 and 2.

Maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much as I played it before the other two, but for those that love knocking it I found it the perfect gateway drug to the Fallout universe and it helped garner one more devouted Fallout fan.

Just saying you might want to give it a try as well.

-Cheers

What the hell is wrong with these boards? Doesn't matter what I write up, all the reply shows is a random quote or nothing at all.

Edit: Ok nice, so quick edit is the only thing that lets me actually save what I write on the board. Nice. Well I'm too tired to actually respond to the OP anymore, since I can't delete either I'll let this be here as my complaint to the board management.

If you actually go through all the story blocks and truely enjoy fallout 1 (which I assume is the point of downloading it) and you play in manageable chunks without sacrificing your social life there is a good chance you won't finish it by the release of Fallout 3.

fallout 1 is long depending on how you play it. if you try to do all you can in the towns you get to it can be long. if you just blaze on through exploring all you can you may or may not get slaughtered randomly or get through some tough spots by pure luck. depends on you. just remember neither fallout one or fallout 2 have autosave so save OFTEN i cant stress this enough

You can finish Fallout 1 in a day. As long as you build a decent character and don't spend a lot of time dying and failing.

Whilst you dont have to have played the first two games, I would advise playing them anyway. Yeah theyre old and the graphics are poor by todays standards but theyre great fun and have a wonderful sense of humour . There's cultural references throughout the games and they have hours of game play in them. If anything therre worth playing just for the storyline of the Fallout universe.

I replayed both of them twice over the last month. And a little modded tactics too. (I love having advanced power armour in the second mission). They are worth the play but you will never beat them without a walkthrough before the 28th.

as grimhound referred to, you can buy fallout 1, 2 and tactics for 5.99 each at www.gog.com. Yours to download and keep, drm free. Really worth it even if you have cd's already. also, I think they are more mod friendly than the gametap version, which is encrypted.

Yeah, GOG.com is pretty sweet.

Fallout 1 and 2 are classics.
If you don't own them, with them being so cheap on GOG and there being no DRM attached, no reason not to own them.

I suggest you play the 1st Three including Fallout: Tactics they're like ?9.99 or less for all three besides.......how are you going to decide the traits you want? I strongly suggest Bloody mess there is something compelling about killing a Super Mutant with a cattle prod.......watching it sizzle whilst holding a gattling gun and you only equiped with leather armour.......:P hitting a rat for 999 damage point blank and watching the resultant mess :P

I thought Tactics was ok, it made sense for what it was. I played through it a bit in the past month, my main complaint was having to face mutants armed with 50-cal M2s who can rip your entire squad to shreds if you step one toe inside their 45-yard range. One of the nice things I noticed is that friendly fire does drastically less damage than in other Fallout games, arming everyone with burst weapons isn't suicidal.
