Seriously though? The best I got is that they are called the Left-handed elves because the Redguards were a straight atomo-blade slicing bunch. Since most warriors are right handed they called the Left-handed elves left handed because they found them odd. Maybe the left-handed elves just do things differently from the redgaurds and thats the reason for the name. Other than that? They had to make way for the way of make way aka the Hoondings and atomo-blademasters of the ancient sunken continent of the Redcoat Jedi.

Well, you came close, I guess. Left-handed-ness is traditionally associated with dishonesty and evil. So the name is really a slur on them. I remember them being referred to as "Aldmer" though.
