What is "Todd Mode?"

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:21 am

I was looking at some thread today in the Skyrim forum and somebody mentioned the words "Todd mode" in reference to a video which was viewed. I've heard of Todd mode before, but what exactly is it?

I would have asked this in the Skyrim forum, but it got busy here at work and I lost the thread I was looking at.

Todd Mode is a Pune, that is a Play On Words, regarding "God Mode." For demo videos, Todd plays characters who are started at high levels with beefed stats in order to show the game without spending half the demo on game over screens.

 That's funny. So it's like he's over killing everything. Makes sense I guess....all the vids he narrates look as if he's just knocking everything out of his way and stuff.

I'm sure Todd likes the comparison.

Sad thing is, it promotes the game as yet another mindless hack & slash fest, with no real challenge. That's a fine way to impress the "occasional" gamer who just wants to pick a fight to let off steam (I wish the whole game would be let off Steam), but it tells the old "die-hards" that there's very little "game" left in the game.

As Gertrude Stein said about Oakland, California: "There is no "there" there."

It's mainly an excuse that those who favor a hack and slash, shallow experience use to dismiss gameplay concerns.

"Hey, it seems like the NPCs were static and not lively. The dialogue trees were weak."

"Todd mode, his high speechcraft causes them to be like that. Alpha build!"

Funny, I don't recall having ever seen that exchange, or anything like it. I recall people saying the combat looked too easy, and Todd Mode boosted stats were the explanation, which seems to have been verified by the open demos at conventions, but never anything like that.

And then again, I don't recall anyone "favoring" shallow gameplay in the first place.

Because when you get 15 minutes to demo a game, you want to spend 10 minutes looking at loading screens after you have died for the 20th time. Altered stats were used in the demos so that people were able to get right in and SEE the game. It has nothing to do with trying to sham the customer or promote shallow game play.

You haven't been spending countless hours of time in the Skyrim forum like some of us. ;)

Todd Mode isn't essentially God Mode, Todd Mode just sets the health to the highest number and over pumps other stats in the effort to avoid dying in the demos.

Spelling police alert.

It is a pun. Pune is a place in India. Unless there is another pun here, which I have missed.

In which case, laugh at me, not with me, please :)

 Yup.

I guess it's just a convenience thing, then. There's non-stop action and whatnot.

You think Todd Mode is cool, just try and wrap your rude hermeneutical interface-tendrils around the Aurbical meninges-autophaging pleromplasticity of MK Mode.

It'll change yer life, for the weirder :teehee:
