I was talking with my friends and we always make custom classes when a game permits it. I know Skyrim doesn't have any classes, so no need to badger me.

This got me thinking of when you make a custom class in OB, they always called it adventurer. (I can't remember if MW does it). My group of friends were talking, and we all have some different ideas of what an adventurer is.

One of my friends thinks of the quest loving warrior, going from place to place looking something to do. Tribe of goblins giving a town trouble? Taste my Blade!
The other one thought of someone who would do anything for some coin. Need me to defeat a cave full of grues? Better be some damn good pay.

Personally, I see it as a jack-off-all, master-of-none type person. Going wherever life takes him, occassionaly getting caught in a sh*tstorm every once in a while, using/learning what skills he needs to.

I noticed that we all, more or less, described our main characters.
I guess thats why Beth chose that title, its so vague that it can mean pretty much anything you want it to.

Personally I think of a lootable corpse somewhere in a cave/dungeon.

An adventurer is a catch-all term for someone who goes on adventures. It doesn't entail anything specific otherwise, but you can infer what activites they might engage in based on the setting that the adventurer lives in.

For example, an adventurer in Cyrodiil would probably explore Ayleid ruins, forts, and caves in search of items he could sell or use. He would also probably take advantage of taverns and inns, as well as visiting small towns and traveling from city to city.

When I hear "adventurer", I think of Indiana Jones, Natty Bumppo, Crocodile Dundee, Indiana Jones, Kara Ben Nemsi, Keill Randor, Indiana Jones, Odysseus, Don Quijote and Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr.

It's a concept I can't quite define with words, though. Words are a construct of order and structure, while Adventurers are agents of chaos, change, and destabilizers of the Status Quo.

... You have a very cynical view of Adventurers. Those that don't have a strong moral code tend not to last long: an Adventurer needs friends and connections to succeed.

Adventurer? Sounds like someone looking for trouble just for the thrill.

I hate it when ingame my character is called "adventurer". My character has always a far more specific role/job, "adventurer" just sounds silly and almost childish in my opinion.

What he described is probably what 90% of people who play Elder Scrolls do.

I think of a "generic" treasure-hunter, somebody who's out to loot valuable artifacts rather than document them, or plunder the tombs belonging to upstanding families. Fortunately, the term can be edited in the last two games, at least for the PC versions.

I'm not saying they wouldn't, but as it is most adventures adventure right? Most adventures usually involve grave robbing (You do loot a lot of tombs in the elderscrolls universe). In most cases they look for fights, fights they know will end with violent murder, for themselves or more likely whatever fool crosses the hero. They tend to rip clothes/money/keys/armor/weapons/whatever they held dear in life from there not even cold victims. Adventurers would probably be in jail if they didn't have connections, or if they weren't useful to the current emperor

Same here, especially Indiana Jones! He is the quintessential adventurer archetype. I plan on creating a character inspired by him, something of an archaeologist or grave robber; a treasure hunter.

I would much prefer the townspeople to say "Hey Ass Hole!" as that adequately describes every character.

A word to describe "adventure' to me would be "alien". Afterall, isn't that what adventure is about? Discovering something new and exciting? Whether it be exploring caves or dungeons, or even climbing the same mountain you've climbed since you were a kid. Either way, you're going to find something new.

An adventurer to me is a person who can't settle in one place for too long, someone who HAS to move around and visit places, an Adventurer can be anything as far as skill ranges, and it just so happens that it's a default for what isn't named on the board of classes.

Put simply, it's a nameless class of custom livelihood.
