Thoughts on Ulysses and What "lies" in the Divide?

He was said to ask them what makes nations, and what breaks nations. This leads me to believe that he wants to re-establish the Old World, but now with the wisdom of how is was demolished.

I'd laugh my butt off if Ulysses hid his old holotapes of Elvis that he bought from the King there, inside an old Church of Elvis he plans on reviving.

Given his confidence, I would say he has a reason he believes as such. Unless they're going the boring route of Ulysses being just another boring, deluded psychopath. In which case, sure, he's just a deluded nut. But since Ulysses has, so far, pretty much known exactly what he wanted and exactly how to get it, I'm willing to bet he has a good reason to say that the Old World sleeps in the Divide.

He also never says he's trying to wake the Old World up, there's always the possibility that he knows exactly what you're complaining about, that somehow bringing the pre-war US back would be a bad idea. He could, in fact, want to ensure that whatever 'sleeps' there dies. His Old World flag could be a warning, or a reminder that Old World dangers still lie int he Wasteland, waiting to awaken and bring potential doom.

He does mention that he's looking for a group with 'new ideas'. If he wanted to recreate the Old World, he wouldn't be looking for new ideas, he'd be looking for people recycling the idea of the Old World, ie, the NCR.

That is a good point as Ulysses' word may not necessarily imply that we wants to bring back the old world. "America sleeps. And until it's dead, I carry it. Just like I carried you. More than hope. Belief." Maybe carrying around the old world flag is symbolic of how people in the wasteland still cling to some ways and ideals of the old destoryed world. Which he feels that a new ideal government cannot rise up until all relics and memory of the old is dead and he can stop "carrying" old america. Though how that would connect to the divide and the courier I have no idea.

at the canyon wreckage beckons the Player to "go home now Courier 6", suggesting that the Courier was originally from the Divide

It doesn't necessarily say "Go home now Courier Six...to the Divide." Maybe he knows where the Divide is because there is writing on the Canyon Wreckage that says "the Divide."

Anyone remember how Ulysses said

Ulysses: He's gone to the Sierra Madre. That's a special kind of hell. He won't come back. Someone smarter, tougher's going to kill him. If the Madre doesn't.

Anyone think he was talking about you? Meaning that before the little bullet to the head you have to be one hell of a Currier. So it is probably like relearning to ride a bike.

More like he has this godly insight/wisdom and he knows Elijah is the type of person to die of his own obsessions. The whole "Someone smarter, tougher going to kill him" is just a reference a thumbs up to the player for being "LEET"

Point being I would look into it that much.

What ever Ulysses wants is an answer, and the Courier has the answer, but Ulysses has the Question. If this question is answered, it could be more dangerous than two Great Wars combined. Either way, only one will be standing after the clash, or neither one of them. The Divide will be the couriers last place and maybe the couriers grave. When two legends clash into each other, things start to break apart tearing the world into a lifeless rock. What ever the question is, it will be a threat to the entire planet, or the only salvation to humanity, only the right answer can decide that.

Meh, the unknown impact the courier had on Ulysses was getting him cut from the game....

But in seriousness, if you are allowed to make up your own background then there isn't much they can use for what the courier unknowningly did to Ulysses. Since all we know of our past is we were a courier it is most likely the courier took a job Ulysses wanted or took a job that had an affect on Ulysses. I.e Delivering a package near his ranch which had something poisonous to his big horners. Or the Courier delivered a package to Ulysses that made him obsessed with the Old World in the first place....

I don't believe Ulysses is so mysterious. Both of these people are Courier 6, if you haven't noticed. Right now, that name's their most basic connection. I believe Ulysses is aware he will die, like all men do. He wants a strong shepherd, to receive America's flag. If the Courier won't live his second life for this Cause, Ulysses would like to die the way he lived: protecting the memory of his homeland's, revolutionary spark.
