The Dirt Patch Which Does Not Gather Snow

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 12:38 pm

So in Skyrim, we've seen painted cows, but as far as I can tell no sign of the Dirt Patch (or Snow Whales, unfortunately). I was hoping it would tie into the main quest or something in the Reach. Anyone have any idea what the Aldudagga was referring to, or how the Dumbest Thing Ever happened and Dagon caused it to end up in the sky? It couldn't be the Isle of Caecilly, could it? (seems too far from the Reach)

And then the dirtbirds....the Third Fight made them sound like Redguard (mentioned their goddess Tava and "soil-briasted"). However, their nesting in the Dirt Patch sounded a lot like the underground Dwemer colonies in Skyrim. So could they be a weird fusion of the two? Can't imagine Redguards gravitating to any glitch caused by Alduin yawning but maybe that's because I didn't read up enough about their lore.

I wouldn't take those stories too seriously. The painted cows were simply a polite nod to that lore intended to get a smile and a chuckle out of those in the know, I think.

But I wanted a Snow Whale summon.

I think the dirtpatch might be a reference to Oblivion's landscape system, where after a certain number of assigned textures no more could be added. You could end up with a patch of ground where you couldn't paint snow. I've also had issues where cells of land would randomly end up in the sky. No idea if that's the meaning that was intended, but it could be applied.

The Aldudaggas are a charming mix of joke, story, and honest-to-game lore. I'd place the dirtpatch in the first two categories.

We got a whale-bone bridge...and I noticed in my game many dirt patches that failed to gather snow.

....It was due to engine limitations, but I'm sure the devs can pass it off as a nod to the Aldudagga.

I was about to mention, in Sovngarde, we do have a massive whale bone bridge....

How wacky. Every engine and UI failure seems to have a lore related excuse. Don't get me wrong, I love it. It's just supremely goofy.

That said, I've noticed it has been incredibly harder to Passwall in Skyrim than in Oblivion or Morrowind.

And thank the Talos too. Eventually gigantic mountains get a little tedious.

I always like to think that using the console is my character achieving CHIM.

I remember reading about a theory that was that the Dwemer accessed the console or something...?

They accessed the console and entered a command to make them into Numidium. However, the client crashed midway while executing the command, which corrupted the Dwemer Species client and forced them to become the skin of Numidium.

player.setrace NUMIDIUM

Lol. I believe that being Numidium's skin was their goal, however the "unplanned" was that Numidium didn't activate to return them to god-hood.

I like to think the whales on the puzzle things in Skyrim are snow-whales. :P

And remember, the snow whales fly so high up you cannot see them.

Though, I would have liked to at least see a wasabi-rimmed shield in Skyrim. :(

The mysterious demise of the Dwemer, dungeon-lords of deep-demesne, reduced to Kagrenac cheekily failing to check his console codes before hitting "Enter". :(

heh, thinking of that in conjunction with the tradition of berserkers biting their shields to calm down after battle-rage is pleasing.

It seems possible that the awakening of Alduin has had some effect on the dirt patch which does not gather snow.
And that the snow-whales could just be dragons- for Skatmat had been known to create fog which blinds opponents,
which isn't that far off from the effects of joy-snow. *Maybe* maybe the joy-snow is just a dragon shout (Od Drem?).

Just some food for thought, eh.

Its activated a few times. Just never permanently; it needs the Heart of Lorkhan (which sux cuz it's been banished.)

and Snow wales = Huge, flying Horkers imo. not dragons. We always have the DLC...

The Sermons apparently referenced a weird glitch in Redguard.
