Morrowind on Steam - bad idea, right?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2009 5:59 am

Hi.
I had heard on here that Morrowind on Steam doesen't allow for mods/modding, and what not.

If that's true, I definitely won't get it.
I just noticed it because a few days ago we got Broadband (after dial-up for 11 years) and Steam has it for a slightly lower price than the Bethesda Store.

Besides that, I guess I prefer to own boxed copies rather than Steam. Just in case, someday, the internet implodes or something...

From what I've read, mods DO work on Steam edition of Morrowind, you just need to redate .bsa files back to 2002, and if you want to use MGE you need to disable "Steam community in-game" or something like that.

So is it worth the trouble? I wouldn't get it on steam for $15 as it is now I believe, but lets say it's $5 or something... I do really love MW, and I really want it for PC.

Cheaper than $15 or cheaper than $5? Heh...

Anyway, I can't seem to find it anywhere for less than about $20. Note that I live in Rural Canada, I.E. middle of nowhere. No Best Buys, no Target, no nuthin.
We have basically Wal-Mart and...uh... hmm. That's really all.
Also, on eBay I haven't seen it for a great price either. Maybe 15-20.

The feature of Steam-based MW that I would LOVE to have is the no-cd feature. If you buy on Steam, no need to swap DVDs around when playing other games... AOE3, AOE2, Fallout3, etc... Man, I would LOVE for Bethesda to bless a no-cd patch by the MW community. I'm quite confident that the MCP could add a tick-box in a matter of minutes. It could check your drive the next time you ran the game, generate a machine-specific key, and verify against the key instead of the DVD for future startups. But, alas. I'm stuck with having the disc in my drive. Hrumph.

I have the Steam version and it is working with 80+ mods including Wrye Mash, mlox, MCP,and MGE (with MWSE). The only downside is that you can't use the TES Construction Set with it. But I just use a separate install of my CD version to mod and test mods.

I'm kind of a newb in this but I want to buy it through steam and use the updated graphics mods. Do I need to use the TES Construction Set for that or is that only for creating my own mods?

(why is n-0-0-b filtered?)

You only need the Construction Set to make your own mods.

Thanks, I know that Steam has a serious issue with mods for most games so I'm still searching around the forum for some information on installing them. If its a PITA it might now be worth it.

I also have a heavily modded steam installation and I've had no problems at all (after redating the BSAs) and the no-CD feature is worth a lot to me. I have a CD copy but I longer use it.

The construction set from a Bloodmoon level version works fine with the steam version; I copied my original CS to the steam folder and it works.

Steam Morrowind works with Mods just fine! I'm using it now and have no no issues! It was cheap, and I love not having to lug around the CDs!

Although, it was helpful to have my Construction Set CD because CS does not come with the Steam version, but can be used with it.
