The Giants of Tamriel

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:25 pm

I was curious about the giants in the elder scrolls, so I'll ask a few questions.

Were the giants of Skyrim the same giants that called the Dwemer "Dwarves" or distant cousins?

Was the frost giant Karstaag related to any of these giants?

Please post your answers below.

I believe these are the same giants. Not entirely sure though.

No idea who he is.

MK recently posted a picture suggestion that Talos was a Giant. I'll see if I can locate it.

As far as the Dwemer, I was thinking the same thing when I saw this thread. I'd assume they're the same.

As for Karstaag, he doesn't look as humanoid as the Skyrim giants, so he's either something completely different or another kind of giant. Like in Norse mythology there's all kinds of giants. The Skyrim giants could just be regular giants as opposed to like elemental ones: earth, ice, fire.

1) The Giants who named the Dwarves were Ehnofey, who were giants, and eventually devolved into both Skyrim giants and men. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/fight-six-911th-cow outlines this nicely.
2) Don't think so, but we don't really know.

http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/obscure_talos-king-atmora.jpg, but that's not quite what it implies. It's Talos saying goodbye to the king of Atmora, who is a giant.

More interestingly, it implies that Talos can fly, which is exceptionally (though not unreasonably, given that he's Talos) awesome. Given the little fog in front of his head, should we presume that he is flying using the Thu'um?

No. They are in Atmora after all. It's f'ing cold there. On the other hand, flying by shouting at gravity sounds f'ing awesome, so why not?

So it's possible that all men were descended from giants?

The King of Atmora gave Talos an Amulet of Levitation as a going-away present, and also so they could (finally) see eye-to-eye.

Previous attempts included a very large trampoline.

So basically it’s possible that all men were descended from giants?

As I recall, that's actually exactly the point that's made in Aldudagga. http://imperial-library.info/content/fight-six-911th-cow, to be precise.

So we speak of [the Giants] (for we must-- who does not honor their parents?) under the rim of the sky

Here is why: the Giants came from Old Atmora, up there across the Northern Ice back in the gone-to-twilight-now age of myth... and settled here in the Skyrim, and all along the mountain ranges of our coasts. (Yes, they are our true ancestors-- do not believe your aunt from the university-- and, yes, we were once as big as them-- as tall as THIS-- but that is another story).

The rest of the story is a rip-roaring read, so I highly recommend it.

Karstaag may have been a snow demon from Kamal, a remnant from the invasion.
