Summoned creatures driving me nuts

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 2:50 pm

Hello,

I mostly use summoned creatures to help me in tough fights but they have one major flaw which is driving me nuts:
Whenever I summon a creature, it will just stand idle until an enemy actually attacks me. [Not sure if this is Vanilla behaviour?!]
This is sort of a big problem when I summon the creature to shield me from that high level warrior who can one-hit my weak mage... it creates weird situations where I have to run up close to the enemy, let him attack me once and run away, should I survive the attack.
Is there any mod which changes the behaviour of summons so they just attack hostiles in sight after being summoned instead of waiting till I′m attacked?!

Thanks.

They have to wait until you're attacked or the game will label you the aggressor, you will be reported as having committing a crime, and be assigned a bounty.

Would chucking a projectile at the enemy work instead of running up close?

Sadly the author said it′s a little buggy http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1174967-summoning-causes-crashing/page__view__findpost__p__17400859

Thanks for the link but that doesnt do ANYTHING but make the game crash more frequently ^^ Load order is correct.
Just now I entered a cave and some guy with a fancy looking sword came at me. I thought "oh man this looks like bad news", summoned a skeleton which did nothing, ran up to the guy to give him a free shot and he one hit me :swear:

I′m pretty amazed that there should be no other mod adressing this issue since it absolutely breaks any char who relies on summons?! This game has been modded to hell and back with any issue covered but this has been overlooked?

Bounties? I′m not talking about the summons attacking regular people, I′m talking about bandits and monsters.
By that logic I should get a bounty for shooting a bandit who comes at me with an arrow before he reaches me

No, THEY have to attack ME ;)

You misunderstood. They are coded that way so they don't go attacking anyone who hasn't attacked you first. It doesn't matter if they are bandits, monsters, or someone you have a legal writ to kill, summons aren't programmed to strike before the battle actually begins and you either have to hit the badguy first or he has to hit you before the summons will do anymore than just stand/float there. I'm not saying it's logical, that's just how the game was coded.

Aah I see :-)
Well to be honest I didn′t really understand that I could also hit them first, I thought they had to hit me.
So the best strategy seems to be to summon them behind yourself, hurl a spell at the enemy and run behind the summons.
I always summoned them in front of me, the enemy would ignore them, run up to me and start slashing my guts and only then would the summons do something so I figured they′d only help me once I was attacked. Being able to trigger the attack by attacking the enemy with some ranged spell makes things much better of course. Which also makes this whole thread kinda pointless *bows his head in shame*
(Would still be neat to be able to just summon them in a room and let them do their thing though)

Yeah, on the occasions that I've gone down the summoner route, it's summon your beastie, then use a cheap destruction spell to target your intented enemy. Usually a nice long duration weak spell works nice. Constant damage while your summon hacks and slash.

Don't be ashamed. There really ought to be a mod that recognizes hostiles and will send your summons after them. If it can't be modded, them perhaps something can be done in the MCP. A sort of "use at your own risk" thing. Can't hurt to ask.
