installing mods that come with no .exe file

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 5:17 am

Skyrim's recently rekindled my love of morrowind. I'm primarily a console player now, and since I no longer have my old morrowind copy, I d/l'd a digital copy from Gamespot and am playing a Beth game on pc for the first time since Daggerfall.

The graphics don't really bug me, but I thought it would be nice to try some mods. I've installed better bodies, which are nice, but I also wanted to install some other mods, like better heads, better clothes, darknuts stuff, etc.

Problem is, some of the ones I've downloaded (better heads) come with no .exe file. I'm semi-computer literate, so I'm guessing if I could get the files into the appropriate folder, it would work. SO, where should I paste the files after I extract them from the zip file?

Thanks!

some mods I think only require you to put them into the data files and not use a esp or exe so its fairly simple. Most of the time its retextures and such that do this because they overwrite the previous texture.

Key thing to remember is that mods are packaged up so files are in correct sub folders. So, as long as the content of each of these folders ends up in the correct game folder, the mod will work.
Just don't make a Textures\Textures folder by mistake

In theory, all if you put the compressed mod file into your datafiles folder, and tell it to extract to here, the mod should install perfectly, but it's always better to extract the mods outside of the MW folder, and move the content over. Sometimes you get clashes, like texture replacers, so I like to check out my existing texture against what the new mod is offering.

If you are new to Morrowind mods, reading the stickies here would help you a lot, especially since you are using a D/l version. Since the CS doesn't come with the d/l versions of MW, modders generally don't use it.

The basic folder structure is as follows:

Morrowind\Data Files\

.esms, .esps, and .bsas go directly into this folder, Meshes, Textures, Icons, Music, Sounds and other mod-added folders are to be found inside the Data Files folder.

Mods are usually packaged with the folder structure such that all you need to do is extract them to the right directory.

In order to use a mod, start Morrowind with the launcher and select Data Files. There you can check or uncheck the mods.

For more complicated installs, it is best to read throughhttp://www.gamesas.com/topic/1305729-mod-recommendations-for-new-players/, as it lists programs to help you with load order, registering bsas and other helpful information.

Quite simple. Extract the files to a seperate folder of their own and drag/drop the contents to the right place in the morrowind directory. Folders named meshes, textures, sounds etc go there.
