Morrowind Overhaul Problem, Game doesn't work...

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:15 pm

So i just finished installing Morrowind again, was very excited etc, finished the Morrowind Overhaul, was very happy all set to play. Now the game won't even load. Like it doesn't even go to a menu or anything, it just goes fullscreen and stays black. At this point, I have twice had to reset my computer as it crashed here.

This is [censored] ridiculous, I installed and followed the instructions perfectly. The only thing that was curious, was I didn't close or really touch anything. The only thing left open after it was done installing was the "Exe Optimizer". It had some options like "patch morrowind" and some other things, but I figured since the game was finally installed, it was just open as a byproduct of the installation so I closed it without touching anything on it.

That is the only thing that makes me think hmmm maybe that made it screwed up. Everything I followed to the letter, my computer can handle really good games, it should be able to handle morrowind with some graphics updates. But I can't even get to a menu. It just goes fullscreen like the game is starting but stays black and crashes my computer so that I need to restart.

Could someone please help me with this. This was a big uneeded hassle and if this doesn't work I am just going to give my Morrowind disks away, since I won't be playing it anymore after this.

I have the morrowind disks from 2002 so no I don't have the digital version....

Sorry I was kind of a dike I am just so pissed right now... I was REALLY excited been looking forward to it all day, I followed instructions to the letter, not the steam version, and I can't even start the game without having to reset my computer. Sorry if I was rude.

Try the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1319942-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics-20/, but be sure to read through it and the readme before posting your installation path, operating system (32 or 64-bit) and game version.

Okay this is amazing.

The installer alone is just..... I dont even know. It's amazing.

Thank you so much for all this hard work, especially on the installer. Makes the process so easy!

EDIT: Seem to be having some sort of problem....... Gives me the below errors immediately after I launch the game, before I see anything on the screen. It then crashes the game everytime....

Failed to create shader Shaders\TexCoord_4_Offset_A.vso

Failed to create shader Shaders\TexCoord_4_Offset_A.vso

Failed to create shader Shaders\WC_TexCoordGen.vso

Failed to create shader Shaders\FauxEMBM_Displace_2.pso

Unable to load pixelshader file: FauxEMBM_Displace_2.pso
Failed to create shader Shaders\FauxEMBM_Displace.vso

Unable to load vertexshader file: FauxEMBM_Displace.vso
Hey there!
Don't worry, there's already a fix for this at the Morrowind Overhaul forums. http://forum.rpgitalia.net/viewtopic.php?p=3020160#3020160
Glad you liked the installer, by the way!

This is literally the exact problem that is happening with my game, unfortunatly that link doesnt work so could someone maybe get in touch with kingpix or perhaps point me to the fix if they know it, or if the link works for them, that would be really helpful, thankyou.

Um, really, KINGPIX looks at his release thread every day. You should post what I suggested over there.

Hmmm thankyou Elaura. I browsed that forum and found there was a sticky for my problem. http://forum.rpgitalia.net/topic/14581-warnings-and-ctd-with-mgso-v20-mge-xe-fixed/

If you could maybe read through some of it, I have a headache now and from what I read, they say its "fixed" but from what I read I could not garner any sort of fix from it. They said I needed to run the game but I can't even get to the main menu so I don't understand.

It brings up the think where I can launch the game, bring up the datafiles and mess with the load order, options. I read the options and turned off pixel shading. It crashed. I then put the game in windowed mode and it actually got to the main menu. I clicked new game and it immediatly crashed.

Also, just wanted to edit. I don't need to run as admin because I use XP 32 bit. There is no admin function, my profile is the only one on the computer.

Turn off pixel shading and then exit out of the launcher.

With XP 32 it shouldn't matter where Morrowind is installed as long as it's patched up to the latest.

Run the MGSOOptions again and go to the last tab. Select no MGE and let it finish.

Yeah I did that and the game started and its now at the crappiest resolution. I checked the program that let me change the resolution of the game and its gone now. I think I am done. Thankyou for the help

Okay I'm not done. Just 1 more screwup away from giving up. This game is not worth the amount of trouble this mod is putting me through...

I did what you said but now the resolution svcks and I don't want to play the game like that, and the program that let me change it has now disappeared so...

The next step would be to try each version of MGE above the original. It seems pretty clear to me that there is an incompatibility with some graphics cards and some versions of MGE, but if you're done, I'm wasting my time here. You're welcome.

Okay finally got the new game to work without crashing. It skipped completly the opening sequence of morrowind. And I left the boat at seyda neen and the game looked like utter garbage, nothing like the screenshots I saw... I guess I have to try them all now... Ugh.

Sometimes it's necessary. When you reach the one that crashes you again, then you know that version and above probably aren't compatible with your GPU.

Apparently I vastly underestimated my computers capabilites. Either that or this has some of the poorest optimization this side of compton. 1.6 frames per second looking directly at the town of seyda neen. Yikes... Now I need to mess with the graphics options, shame too I liked how it looked.

Just wanted to say thanks to you because nobody else helped really and I woulda gave up a long time ago without your help. Hopefully I can find some good options that make the game look nice and be playable! Thanks again Elaura :)

You're welcome. My laptop is a fairly good gaming machine, but Morrowind rides the short bus concerning optimization. The game itself does not support hyperthreading and relies more heavily on the CPU than on the GPU. I've found that lowering antialiasing and anistropic filtering help as well as only using the sunshafts shader. Lowering draw distance to around 10 cells will help. I don't particularly like the other shaders anyway and see virtually no drop in quality with AA and AF lowered.

Sadly, as much as the community does to improve the game, the engine itself is the limiting factor.

Okay could you help me with the shaders now? I have a laptop as well thats way better than my PC but I don't like playing games on it because the 17 inch screen is soo small for my taste!

I thought the shaders would be a walk in the park but it seems complex I didnt wanna touch anything.

I turned the grass off and the game looked like garbage once again. Ugh..... Feeling like banging my head on the desk.

grass doesn't really affect FPS by much because of the way it generates.

What's the problem you are having with the shaders?

You said I should mess with the shaders, but I have no idea what to click, or once I click it, what I am doing, I don't wanna ruin it!

On another note of conversation, and I have always wondered this. Do you think anyone actually discovered the Daedric face of God on their own? I remember a long time ago, looking up a guide on how to collect all the rare artifacts in morrowind. If I had wandered into the place where the helm was. I likely wouldnt have even looked up once. My bet is that someone saw it in the editor, saw its location, and scoured the place because their knew it was in there somewhere, I find it hard to believe someone would explore the place that vigilantly without knowing they were looking for it!

Most likely everything was found in the editor first.

Which version of MGE did you end up with?

I ended up with Rev 178. Just picked it randomly and seems to work. Problem is game runs but doesnt look anywhere near as good as I hope, hoping with messing with the shaders maybe I can make it playable while still looking great.

Global Graphics tab:

Antialiasing lower for speed, higher for looks.

Render state tab:

Anistropic Filter, lower for speed, higher for looks

Options: If you're going to use shaders, check Hardware Shader

Fog:
Depth pixel for speed
Range vertex for looks

Tools tab:

click the Shader editor button
click Edit active chain
In order to select a shader, you double click one from the top box and it should go to the bottom box. You can select more than one and move them up and down in the "chain". Preview. Personally, I only use sunshafts and I don't see it in the .178 list. I don't miss the other shaders and they make no difference to me how the game looks.

You can clear any shader from the chain by double clicking it in the bottom box. You can clear them all using the "clear" button. When you find a chain you'd like to try, click save. You really can't mess anything up. All you have to do is clear them all out and start over if you don't like them.

I decided to just go with no shaders for now. I am messing with the water reflection I am going to test it out now.

OK well I decided to switch it to the max settings, the MGE XE or w/e, the best one. Then messed with some of the other stuff there, turned off and shaders, and I am fairly happy with how it looks and it runs well! UNfortuantly I forgot morrowind doesnt autosave and it just crashed and I lost 2 hours of progress :D Oh the woes of morrowind, I'll play it later, but thanks for all the great help Elaura, I mean it!

You're very welcome. 2 hours is good for a modded Morrowind installation. The game will autosave while sleeping or waiting, but it's best not to rely on auto or quicksave. Although great progress has been made with savegame corruption, it still happens from time to time. It is more likely to happen with autosave or quicksave, when overwriting a previous save (always save in a new slot), and when saving outdoors. Try to save in an interior cell when possible.

Enjoy playing it. I'm glad you're happy with how it looks now.

Return to III - Morrowind
