was going to start thieves guild (finding the thieves guild) quest, when one of the thieves told me that the grey fox wanted to meet me (as in title) how the heck did i get this quest? it shouldn't be for a while into the thieves guild questline (when i looked it up) i did try it out of interest, but the grey fox just asks me to move along  i will do the questline with a different character though as my female breton crusader would never go down that road.

It might be a bug. I remember on one of my first games I never finished the main questline because I did something too early or something and then I couldn't get the quest.
Someone else might know more, I'm not so clued up on game bugs and things.

Which version are you playing on? (PC, Xbox, PS3?)

This is what it says on http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Turning_a_Blind_Eye
'This quest can be accidentally triggered by visiting the Temple of the Ancestor Moths, see the bugs section for details. If so, Methredhel will give you a message starting this quest the next time you talk to her -- even if you have not yet joined the Thieves Guild. Although it is possible to complete the Thieves Guild questline this way, it is also possible to trigger several subsequent bugs:'
