First Timer, Want to Play MW like the Thief Book Series

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:39 pm

Hey all!

I've played Oblivion several years ago (for a few weeks, did not like it) and now trying Morrowind. I have the game looking gorgeous and http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/, but now need some questions answered.

Is there a mod that auto saves - at intervals, perhaps? I know about f5.

I have clicked on a birthsign power and now it sits in my lower left corner. Anyway to turn it off?

Is there a mod, like one I had in Oblivion, that allows you to gather all plants in range? IIRC, it was a spell you cast.

How does one open the console?

I made a "test" character to learn the controls, am now am getting the hang of things and ready to try out a real character. I like sneaking about, avoiding killing, thieving and using acrobatics to avoid fights. Is MW conducive to this kind of playstyle? I am more interested in story, exploration (which is why I spent hours getting the game to look so amazing - I mean way better than Oblivion even!), intrigue and politics...that sort of thing. Anyone read The Thief Series by http://meganwhalenturner.org/? That sort of thing. With this in mind, is MW my kind of game?

BTW, I am very patient, not into powergaming and all that, so that is why MW appeals to me.

What character choice would you recommend for the way I want to play?

There is an option within Morrowind to autosave when you rest, which is usually frequent. Would that work for you?

Lower left? It's probably just selected for spellcasting. You can switch to another spell/enchanted item if you don't want to see the power's icon.

I don't know any mod that does that. Just mods that allows you to gather plants by clicking them, oblivion-style. (In Morrowind, you have to 'open' the plant like a box and collect the ingredients.)

How does one open the console?

By pressing the key just left of the "1" key.

I didn't read The Thief Series so I can't comment on that, but exploration/sneaking around + avoiding danger/intrigue and politics, that sounds a lot like Morrowind if you ask me. :)

BTW, I am very patient, not into powergaming and all that, so that is why MW appeals to me.

Good, if you take your time and learn about this new world and its culture, you'll probably enjoy MW a lot. Don't get me wrong though. A powergamer can still have plenty of fun in Morrowind (I know I did :P)

What character choice would you recommend for the way I want to play?

I'm not very good at suggesting character builds, so I'll leave that to other more experienced players.

Oh and welcome to Vvardenfell. :foodndrink:

I have read the first Thief book, and loved it when I was younger. Recently, my girlfriend read the 2nd book and said it wasn't as good. I think Morrowind can work for you, although it might not be exactly what you're looking for. But a stealth character can be well played, although the more you attempt Gen like pacifism, the harder it becomes. And it depends on how much magic you're willing to use.

If you want to make a thief, I'd recommend a Khajit or a Bosmer. Bosmer have the advantage of wearing helmets and shoes, but Khajit look cool.

Thanks for the help and tips. I am still hoping someone will come in here and give me some good tips on a Character Build. So far I am thinking Wood Elf (also called Bosmer?) with a Sneak major. What sign would be good?

What sign would be good?

There's several ones that could work.

-Warrior: For a very nice accuracy bonus.
-Lady: Huge stat boost that will give you more hitpoints in the longterm and easier interactions with the npcs.
-Steed: Stat boost if you wanna have better than average movement speed.
-Atronach: Absorbing half of the spells thrown at you will make spellcasters not much of a threat.

But as long as you avoid the Lord and the Serpent birthsigns, you should be alright.

As for the character build, you could also add your main weapon skill in the majors. Do you want to take down your enemies from a distance with marksman? Being a stealth character, you'll probably be wearing Light Armor. That armor skill could go at least in the minors. Do you want to repair your equipment yourself? Armorer can be another skill to include (minor or major). Will you open locked chests and doors with lockpicks or using magic? The result (security or alteration) could be one more major skill. Do you want to brew your own potions using alchemy? Being able to make healing potions can be convenient. If you want to easily persuade NPCs, Speechcraft is a good addition too.

That's already a good amount of possible skills you could include in your build.

Yeah, the one thing I want to avoid if possible is killing. That is my main dislike of this genre, the emphasis on killing to get ahead. So my way around this is sneaking, running and when that fails, use a spell to drain fatigue or calm. I am willing to use mods if need be to get the game experience I want.

I hate combat.

A large portion of Morrowind's quests are based on interactions with NPCs and persuasion rather than extermination, so you should have plenty of stuff to do in the game. Just make sure you don't join the Morag Tong (the assassin guild). Anyway, the Illusion skill will be useful for sure. Charm, Calm, Demoralize, Paralyze, Invisibility and Chameleon are all excellent tools to avoid unneeded fights. Athletics (combined with decent speed) could also allow you to outrun your enemies.

Thank you for the great help, Logorouge! You've eased my mind that MW can be a fun game for my way of playing. I am much more into story and depth and immersion, exploration and taking my time then hackin' and slashin' and collecting loot. (Though, as a thief, my character is not at all adverse to grabbing something that is not hers.)

One more question for anyone who knows...is playing as a diplomat, where the speech skill is used to gain friends and influence possible in MW? Is the speechcraft skill even worth bothering with? Does it help in quests?

You can't go through the entire game with only diplomacy, but there are many quests where Speechcraft is useful.

Here's is a build you could use for your character:

Race: Wood Elf
Birthsign: Lady (+25 Endurance and +25 Personality)
Specialization: Stealth
Favored attributes: Agility and Luck

Major skills:
- Illusion
- Light Armor
- Long Blade or Short Blade
- Marksman
- Sneak

Minor skills:
- Acrobatics
- Alchemy
- Athletics
- Security
- Speechcraft

I have included some fighting skills even though you said you don't like combat because there will be times where you simply can't avoid it. Illusion will be a great skill for you with spells like Calm (stop enemy from attacking), Charm, and Invisibility. Sneak is another vital skill. Light Armor, Long/Short Blade, and Marksman are major so that they start at a reasonably high level and will be useful when you need them. Acroabtics and Athletics are great minor skills because they are two of very few skills that don't include a random chance to fail. They will give you mobility and allow you to better run away. Alchemy is for increasing Intelligence but it is also a very useful skill. Having it as a minor skill will show you the effect of potions (without it you don't know what potions do) and will make it much easier to train it. Security is again for your thieving. It will be a little hard to use at first, but you can get higher quality lockpicks to make up for it. Speechcraft works well enough as a minor skill and it will be useful in improving people's disposition towards you.

Lady is the perfect birthsign for you. It gives you Endurance for more hit points per level and Personality so everybody will have a higher disposition towards you. It's the best birthsing for new players. For attributes I went with Agility instead of Endurance because you said you care more about roleplaying than about powergaming. But Luck will fit RP (a thief who is making risks all the time needs some luck) and is also a good choice from a powergaming perspective because you can only ever increase it by 1 point every level.

You may want to put unarmored in the major skills, otherwise you're going to have a really tough start because of the very low armor rating you'll have.

Indeed. He put unarmored in minor as well, and he's dying constantly. :P

Don't forget to use the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19510, it includes an important fix for the unarmored skill and many other things.

There's always http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1576 (though I haven't personally used it yet, so I'm just going by the info).

According to the PES details:
this mod was created in an effort to give thieves and stealth-skilled characters in Morrowind a more interesting and rewarding experience, and fixes a number of glaring imbalances in the way some of the thief-oriented systems were implemented in-game.

Improves Lockpicking, Traps, Open Spells, and adds Stealth/Sneaking enhancements based on Weather and Time-of-Day.

The weather & time of day effects sound quite interesting in themselves, for playing any type pf character really; from the readme:
Weather and Time of Day now
offer cumulative sneak bonuses (only in
exteriors). Nothing drastic, but thieves can
now use darkness and weather to their advantage
when sneaking about. I find it makes me far
more alert to my environment in-game, and
enhances the thief-y feel of lurking about.

Return to III - Morrowind
