Why do I have to wait in real time for some of these crashes

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 9:34 am

If I wait a few hours in real time, or a day perhaps, it will fix some of the crashes I am having. Like currently, it keeps crashing in Shivering Isles where I'm trying to do the restore the cold flame quest. I tried loading a previous save, and now that save crashes, and it crashes instantly unlike the newest save. I didn't have any problems with the previous save before, and now out of the blue, it starts crashing when I load it up.

By "wait in real time," do you mean with the game not running? If you start a new game from scratch, does it crash, or is the problem confined to a particular save file?

If things work when the system is first turned on, but crash when it's been running a while... Some kind of heat problem? Crashes that happen repeatedly when the game has been running, but that don't happen when the system is newly started, might suggest that some hardware is overheating or malfunctioning when it's at operating temperature.

Yeah, I mean I'll close the game, then later on, like a few hours later, I would load up Oblivion and it'll work perfectly fine. And I never turn off the computer until I go to sleep, so I don't think it's a case of restarting my computer that fixes it.

I haven't tested it out whether or not if it's just my save or not, but I think these crashes at random places.

Well, the game puts a lot of load on both your CPU and your Graphics card, and the load isn't there when you're not playing it. It might be worth checking with temperature monitoring software, just to see if something is getting really hot. There might be a fan that isn't spinning up, or something like that.

I would definitely try loading a old save, or starting a new game, to eliminate the possibility that the problem is a corrupted save.

Some how, I'm still convinced I'm having all these problems, because I reinstalled Shivering Isles, at least I think I did. When I reinstalled it, I didn't bother to uninstall Oblivion or do anything. I just hit installed. and watched the bar fill up completely. Then I tried updating the official Shivering Isles patch again, just in case, but it said old file not found, so I dunno.

The thing is, I think these crashers are random, so starting a new game, or loading up a different save seems pointless, because if it doesn't crash at the same point, it probably will crash some where else randomly for that save file.

Interesting, now it crashes at the Palace Grounds in Shivering Isles again. I made a thread about it a couple of days ago where it kept crashing every time I headed out to the Palace Grounds. I had to use the COC command line to get me out of there, because I couldn't fast travel while I was inside Sheogorath's throne room, and the only way outside was the two doors leading to the Palace Grounds. Well, for that, I ended up trying a couple hours later, and it worked fine, no crashes.

I fast traveled to the Palace Grounds to see if it would crash or not, and it did. Now to see if it crashes at the Arcane University.

EDIT: Hmm, it's crashing again at the Arcane University as well. So maybe the crashes are not totally random? Time to see if it crashes with my other characters.

Well, it still crashes at the same spot (arcane university, Palace Grounds) on my other characters. I even made a new character, and it still crashed.

So the Palace Grounds and the Arcane University were the two where all I had to do was wait a few hours in real time to fix it. I've had other places where it crashed, and I had to wait in real time for it to get fixed, these are just the two I can remember, and the only two where it's consistent. Now the problem is back.

Of course, not all of my crashes are like this, some just requires me to boot up the game again, and the crash would have disappeared.

Well, uninstalling and reinstalling Oblivion didn't seem to help as well. Still crashes at the same points. Maybe when I uninstall Oblivion, I have to delete all my files and folders as well.

This doesn't sound like an installation problem to me. I'm betting that something is getting hot in your computer, or that your power supply is getting flaky, and can't take the extra load when the graphics card is working hard.

Have you checked to make sure that fan vents are not blocked, and that cooling fans are actually running?

I haven't checked it. I just ended up uninstalling Oblivion again and deleting all my folders. I had to reinstall everything, and I only had a few mods running, so it wasn't that bad. It's just that, nowI can't use my old saves anymore. :( Oh well, my paladin was getting boring.

This is no joke, I strongly suggest you download a program such as Speed Fan and monitor your temperature before and after playing.
