opinions about MGSO vs building your own replacer?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 10:06 pm

I love love love love love MGSO, let's get that out of the way. The only problem is I tend to hungrily look at mod listings and I want all of the stuff there and I wonder...

It's confusing because it doesn't seem like ALL of the things in MGSO are in the credits. For example, there's a mod called "Oblivion Septims" where the money is really pretty, but when I look at the MGSO credits, it's not on there.. but it's there in-game. :/ I wonder how much I could end up screwing up if I start replacing stuff, so I'm really apprehensive to do so.

What do you guys think? Anyone use MGSO + a bunch of other replacers? Or just the replacers? Or just MGSO?

Replacers are typically(though not always) esp-less so replacing stuff isnt going to screw up anything.

The overhaul is handy as a resource to pick and choose from or for mods I may have otherwise missed, I've been tinkering with my setup for a couple of years swapping out and changing mods as they are released though so using a base overhaul pack is likely to just cause me a headache. Particularly with NPC heads, sound files and trees.

That was my main question, about NPC heads. I'm only in Seyda Neen but I've noticed the imperials all have the same head. It's.. slightly annoying. -_- What's your favorite NPC replacement pack, Hicks?

I still have a couple of specialized replacers, notably a hair mod, but in general its really good.

My favourite NPCs replacer is the one by Better Head, and also recently the ones by Westly in his WIP thread. ^^

I believe MGSO uses Vvardenfell Visages.. maybe I will check into the ones you just said. Thanks for the info, papillon. :)

If you are referring to the imperial guards, if I remember right, a simple replacer won't get rid of that. You'll need to get a esp mod that adds variety and overrides the default vanilla head assignments. In other words, vanilla assigned the same head to all those guards, so an esp-less replacer will just give that same head a new face, but the head will still be assigned to all the guards.

Nice, thank you papillon! I'll try it.

Eltrane, that's good to know. I didn't realize all the guards had the same face anyway.

The whole thing with the Imperial guards all having the same face would require changing the individual references in the .esps. Add Morrowind Comes Alive on top and you'll have an interesting little job to do. :D

I use Better Eyes for Better Heads so it can limit what texture replacers I can use, I'm just stubborn about giving up the added expression that the moving eyes gives.

Instead I've started making my own, it was mostly a dissatisfaction with the Imperials not really having an identity that stood out from the Bretons and Nords so I decided to make them Hispanic. Progress is slow but with a little luck and time it'll be done eventually. Here's an idea of what's done so far: http://postimage.org/image/jxr20dgh9/

Thank you :) the real credit goes to the people that the faces belong to though. Although having an army of Jon Huertas clones in the Imperial Legion is a little odd  Finding good pics of Hispanic's is a nightmare. I was toying with making the Dunmer Amerindians as they're awesome but they were even harder to find. Looking to make the Altmer a Slavic/Hebrew mix which ought to be interesting getting good images for. They deserve to have strong facial features that make them stand out.

Illy's Fresh Faces is a great replacer to use, I've converted a couple of the faces over to use Better Eyes though that was just for personal use, Redguards Male & Female, Breton Male. As with any modding in Morrowind it all comes down to the fine tuning to find a look that suits you... He says after tinkering with a Morrowind installation for more years than he'd freely admit to ;)

How's progress on the body art retextures you're doing?

Oh, um.. I kind of stopped doing that for a sec until I learn about UVs and stuff. The things I have in mind aren't possible without it, really, and I don't think there's a ton of interest in just the back tattoos, although I like them for my character personally. I might pick it up if I get a hang of 3ds someday. Thanks for asking. :) Of course, if anybody who posts here ever wanted a custom texture replacer for their own character, I would be more than happy to make one. Everyone has been so helpful and nice despite my 10000 annoying questions.

I've had a landscape mod on the backburner for a while now but it needed new buildings so I've started learning Blender, painful process to say the least.

Just thinking out loud for a moment but with what you've been working on and what I'm assuming you are hoping to do also there would be the chance to do not only various forms of body art be it tattoos or scarification etc but also injuries and other marks and decorations. Could be both .esp-less replacers and individual specific NPC orientated .esp files.

Hang on in there :) If we get anything out of it, it'll be some new skills, an expansion in our "angry and frustrated" vocabulary and something to fill time. All being well some new and interesting mods to add to an already vibrant community selection.

With the replacement packs that we've seen it'll be interesting to see where Morrowind is in another five years time.

There are other ways to do it. Someone wrote a unique guards head mod that adds a script to change their faces.

I use http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27765 for the clone issue. It also adds in even more variety like quivers and such. It covers all the types of guards (not just imperial). Modular versions are available too.

I use a mod that adds female imperial guards. It adds variety and I haven't noticed that the guards are all the same in Seyda Neen anymore. I'll dig it up if you're interested.

As far as MGSO and other mods, Anyone who puts together a good compilation will have worked out load order and dealt with certain conflicts which may arise. Since MGSO is really for sound and graphics, you'll probably have less difficulty with conflicts when adding mods. As has been said, if you use pluginless replacers, you should have no conflicts at all.

MGSO can be used on its own or as a base for further modding. Just remember, if you do start adding mods on top of it, you will have to pay attention to the same things you would have to pay attention to if you didn't have MGSO. Load order and mod conflicts.

MGSO 2.0 was my first compilation, ever. After about 10 years, I got tired of loading it all from scratch every time. It was a matter of been there, done that.

EDIT: the mod included in MGSO to alter the gold is "Golden Gold" by Arcimaestro Antares and he is credited. Many mods look similar.

First one to do this was TheLys' http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2358, which Tarnsman incorporated into his http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownloaddetails&lid=4161.

Return to III - Morrowind
