Akaviri Kiai

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 12:37 am

I found this little nugget of truth in the book, "Children of the Sky"

quote= "The power of a Nord can be articulated into a shout, like the Kiai of an Akaviri swordsman."

This suggests that the Akaviri had shouts too and used them on their swords, now is that interesting or what.

The Tsaesci also seem to revere the Dragonborn, like the Nords.

Am I the only one seeing more and more points towards an Akaviri DLC?

We can only guess. Not that I wouldn't like to see something.

Most of the Mannish nations seem to share a two things common:

1) Voice powers
2) Uncoventional mediums for record-keeping.

What doesn't say is if its referring too the Men of Akaviri, or if the Tsaesci

I've always assumed that "Akaviri" refers to the men of Akavir unless otherwise noted. They would have said "Tsaesci" if they had meant the snake people. But then, the snake people are possibly shapeshifters who look like men when they want to interact with men, and that no Akaviri humans ever actually existed.

I don't think the lore we have could be explained with anything else other than having both. The Tsaeci were snakelike, couldn't wear armor and supposedly didn't use shields. The Dragonguard, on the other hand, were bipedal, carried shields, and wore heavy armor.

So unless the Kiai's are words in the dragon language, how can we say they are related (beyond just being shouts)?

We know there were dragons in Akavir, so it doesn't seem very far-fetched to assume their language exists over there as well, and some kind of thu'um-like discipline.

I produced a thread which detailed on a theory that the tsaesci are in-fact soul leeches whom gained the ability to use thu'um like abilities.
So this information about the akaviri kiai doesn't surprise me much. It even sort of adds to my theory, adding that Duskfang could be a kiai sword.

To add to this, there is two type of naming systems for the akaviri men and the tsaesci. The akaviri men seem to use one worded names.
The tsaesci on the other hand have two worded names, connected with a hyphen. Or at least that's what I gather from their descriptions.

Also, there will be no Akavir DLC. Akavir is better suited for a dedicated game or 4.

It could be that they use The Voice like "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%27i" instead of an actual shout, to "enchant" their weapons. Notice the similarity between Kiai and Chi

I think the connection between a kiai and Qi/Chi/Ki is pretty obvious, didn't really need pointing out.

Kiai appears to be a compound of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi (気) meaning mind, breath or spirit and ai(合, 合い), a stem of the verb awasu (合わす), "to unite"; therefore literally "concentrated or united spirit".

Kiai is the Japanese name for a battle-cry, very similar to shouts if you ask me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiai

It seems that the Akaviri are heavily influenced by Samurai-Japanese culture and language (Katana is another example). I wonder if this just applies to the men, I'd like to see a snake wearing a kimono and hakama :P

Well, I would not be surprised to see that. I feel Morowind's culture was based loosely on that, and the reason for that is their somewhat proximity to Akavir.

Proximity doesn't really matter, considering there are very few interactions with the Akaviri. The most Tsaescii influenced area would be Cyrodiil because it was ruled by the Tsaescii for some time. Morrowind would have most interaction with the Snow Demons, from the horribly botched invasion.

According to Alduin's Wall, the Tsaesci (or at least, the Dragonguard) were men, if anyone's wondering.
