texturing question

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 8:10 pm

Hi again! I have absolutely no clue where to begin with creating a texture, and I'm not even sure if it's done in Photoshop or 3ds max. Can anyone give me a clue to get started? In the last few days I've figured out how to do basic things in 3ds max that allowed me to customize the hell out of my race, and now I need to create a texture from scratch. Pretty sure I can figure it out/pick it up rather easily if somebody can just point me in the right direction. I'm going to be texturing a set of horns, if that matters.

Thankies!

To the point, you need something like Gimp or Photoshop and raw material from a place like cgtextures.com. Beyond that, there are plenty of tutorials on the net. However, practice and playing around is the best thing.

Also, if you get Photoshop (I don't know about GIMP), you will need to download and install the .dds plug-in, as that is the file that the game uses.

With all respect if I knew of a good tutorial or had any luck finding one, I wouldn't have asked here. :| There seem to be a lot of tutorials for people who already know what button to click in which program to make texturing happen. I literally have no idea. But thank you for the site, I'll definitely check that out.

Yes, I have the DDS plugin for Photoshop. I know how to alter textures and edit them and save them, I don't know how to *make them* for specific objects.

Well Id advise you to just seek out some existing texture resource sites as a texture for horns should be an easy thing.

Sounds good, I'll try that. Thanks a lot guys <3

warmaster - Yep I have nifskope, I know how to do all that. I should be more specific I think. I created this custom race http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1769/mgescreenshot021.png but unfortunately I did not gain Slof's permission to release this horn mesh. So I found another similar mesh from another mod and I'm going to redo it to look more or less the same, but without using Slof's textures or meshes.

Here's a better screen actually. http://i.imgur.com/b2HL6.jpg So you can see, I know how to mess with textures. I just don't know how to "make" them.

Do you have nifskope yet? Use that to open nifs and change the texture path to use yours.

Okay, I understand what you're asking. You first need to make the mesh, then you will need to UV Map it. You aren't using blender, so I can't help you there, unfortunatly. But, once the mesh is UVMapped, you will be able to export a texture file that has the outline of the UV. Then you load your source image and copy it into the texture file, placing it over the line (I reccomend turning the transperency down on the layer (bottom right box, right click on 100% and change it to 80%) so you can see the lines.) If you need more help, send me a PM and I'll answer your questions if I am able to

That's how I started. I can't texture from scratch, but I'm not bad at copying and pasting source images on the wireframe texture.

I downloaded Ladye/Proudfoots wasp for Creatures, but wanted a realistic texture, so after scouring the net for wasp photos, I ended up with this http://www.piratesretreat.webs.com/C8Wasp.gif

It's a good way to learn the basic tools of Photoshop (or whatever package you are using).
