It makes perfect sense! Why else would the Thalmor invade Skyrim! I wouldn't be surprised if they'll also try to get their hands (if they didn't already) on an Elder Scrolls, go to that point where Numidium was activated, and do something there to destroy it too so the world would end :S

Well, the Altmer have always seen the creation of Mundus to be the gods greatest failure, and Shor/Lorkahn to be the ultimate deceiver. They are also most concerned with there loss of touch with the Divine.

But I think the Thalmor have a much pettier end. After Tiber Septim crushed them with the second god-construct, I believe their ultimate goal is to repay the Nords in kind.

Although it is entirely possible, the High Elves have always concerned themselves with the outer realms more than Mundus.

Theory of the Thalmor disabling the towers DOES make sense ... Remember the Nu-Mantia Intercepts? Lord of Souls basically confirmed the towers. After all, the towers uphold creation and the Thalmor want to become gods (spirits technically, but tomayto tomahto) and the theory's part about the Snow Throat being the last tower makes sense, that much at least.
