[WIPzRELz] Tamriellic Glassworks

Rather than maintain separate threads for WIP and Release, I've decided to create a new thread to house both. (See my second post for WIP Content).

[RELz]: Release (Current Version is 1.4)

Description
-----------------
Glassware in on the Gamebryo engine has always been tricky. Bethesda's wine bottles were extremely simple in execution; not particularly like glass at all. Since the game's release, various authors have attempted to improve on them, however the result has more often than not been a bottle which while much more effective, does not simulate glass terribly well. Tamriellic Glassworks attempts to remedy this using an entirely different form of mesh construction, with the objective of creating realistic bottles which are pleasing to the eye and functional in the game world.

Tamriellic Glassworks: Core:
The core mod adds new wine bottle meshes, textures and icons to the game. Any variety of wine that the player may find in the game has been updated with a new and fresh look. Sit back with a bottle, uncork it, and enjoy.

Tamriellic Glassworks: DLC6 Fighter's Stronghold Addon: (Requires DLC6: Fighter’s Stronghold)
Adds new bottles, and new wines to Battlehorn Castle. Each bottle has now been given a new look and icon, and you will now find that the staff offer two new wines made right at the castle: a red and a white wine for your enjoyment.

Tamriellic Glassworks: Developer's Resource Kit:
Want to make your own Tamriellic Glassworks style bottles? Here's everything you need. Have you got the kit?

Wow. Release is finally out of the way. This thing is going at breakneck pace :).

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the cheap wine bottle as a "Type C'. Somehow it felt a bit too cartoony; just a big 'ol glass bottle, with the world wine taped onto the side and an imperial logo. The wax seal also felt a bit too formal, particularly as I doubt most of the wine is made and distributed by the empire; more likely it is just house wine made locally. So I've taken a cue from the French (and the Morrowind design team, who ultimately may have done the same) and created the "Type D" Wine bottle: A slightly thinner green glass bottle, with a wicker surround. I find myself going through Morrowind's art book and assets quite a bit lately, as it had two things in terms of placeables and statics that Oblivion didn't: style and variety (don't worry, this won't turn into a rant about Oblivion's design direction. Quite frankly it isn't worth the time).

And so presenting: the "Type D" bottle.

Perhaps we may see someone turn this into a candle? Perhaps that someone may be me, who knows. I have a fairly aggressive release schedule planned though, with the next version and next plugin out by Wednesday, along with the next version of the Developer's Resource Kit.

Monday Update:

Work on the new beer bottles is progressing well, with the "Type A" bottle nearly finished. Mesh is a bit more poly-heavy than the wine bottle, but the stopper requires a fair bit more detail this time around. Once this bottle is finished, it will serve as the base for the "Type B" and "C" bottles (ale and mead respectively). Only real snag at this point is that COBL interferes with my pluggin. Methinks that some tweaking is in order.

Oooh... I rather like the new cheap wine bottle! Is the wicker a mesh, or texture?

Out of curiosity, how exactly does COBL interfere? I'm currently using your 1.1 release with COBL, and haven't seen any issues... at least, I don't think I have...

Thanks. The mesh is a bit of both. New basic mesh surrounding the bottle, with a texture sporting a highly detailed normal map.. As for the conflict, there are no issues in 1.1 since COBL doesn't touch the wine bottles. However, since the COBL team elected to add http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8532 mod, all entries for beer, ale and mead have been altered. Easiest way to deal with the conflict is probably to make a COBL-compatible plugin to go alongside the main one.

*EDIT* Good to be wrong once in a while. Apparently COBL doesn't override in the way that I thought it did; the original beer, ale and mead are still present in the game; you just have to look for them. Means that this plugin is back on track.

Wednesday Update:

Just about finished the new Type A drink bottle. I've decided to let beer and ale share a bottle type, as they are fundamentally the same drink (yes, I know there are differences. Not looking to turn this into a battle of the brews). Beer and Ale at least will be released by the end of the day. As for mead, we'll see how far I get on that bottle.

Oooh, I like! The bottles look nice (though I know you'll still likely be tweaking them). I'm not entirely sold on the Beer, Mead, and Ale labels, though. They feel a bit too plain and new to me (in that case, maybe adding a bit more wear to the labels would help). Then again, this might just be because the other drinks have always felt a bit underloved... there's... what, eight types of wine in the vanilla game, compared to each other drink which has only one variant? Someone on the development team for Oblivion must have been a fan of wine, or something

Still, I love what you're doing so far! Do you plan on tackling Cyrodillic Brandy? Gotta love a drink that, despite technically being alcohol, doesn't even get it's own mesh in vanilla...

I like your meshes and textures, but I agree that some of the labels seemed a little too shiny/clean.

I think EruditeDragon's missing the bit where from lore, Cyrodiil's supposed to be very Roman-like, and if you think about what Roman's drank, you think of... wine!
Somehow, when making Oblivion, they dropped/forgot a lot of the Romanesque stuff and retained the wine.

I'm guessing that in Skyrim there'll be a lot more emphasis on the mead/ale side of stuff. Maybe.

Thanks everyone. I was considering adding more wear to the 415 wine bottles, so I`ll probably do that for the 1.3 update, As for the beer, wine and mead, the labels were really quick fixes, meant to add a necessary detail. Even with more wear though, they will still end up being quite plain. Unfortunate result of there being no breweries in Cyrodiil (or anywhere else in Tamriel so far as we know). We really need a brewery and distillery added to the game for this to make more sense. I may still end up adding some new breweries or at least brewery labels to the next version of the mod, if only to add some interest and variety. As for future bottle types, the next 3 that I have planned are Mead, Cyrodiilic Brandy and Daedric Lava Whiskey (DLC3 Addon). Not pinning myself down to a date this time around since that was what prevented the release of the mead bottle (that and the revamp of the wine bottle meshes), but I'd like to say that 1.3 will be out by week's end. We'll see.

If anyone has ideas for brewery names, then by all means I'm open to suggestions.

And speaking of DLC3, I have an idea on how to expand the plugin, but I will need some help for this one; I'd need someone who is knowledgeable with the setting up scripts and NPCs in the CS, and a voice actor couldn't hurt either (I'd do it myself, but I neither have nor have the money for a microphone). If you're interested, contact me and we'll discuss the addon.

Hey Navarris, quick bug report with the new version... the new Cheap Wine bottle has an incorrect texture path on the wicker covering. Other than that, loving the new bottles!

Thanks EruditeDragon. See? This is why we have threads like this! I've put up the 1.2.1 update, along with new versions of the core mod.

Don't forget flin (Cyrodiilic whiskey). There were a number of drinks that should have been transferred from Morrowind, which weren't (and of course drinks like Cyrodiilic brandy which were included, but weren't given their own unique mesh). I did say that I wouldn't pin myself down for a release date this time, and that seems to have been a good thing; less time to work on this in the last few days that I had expected. Next week probably won't get any better. Still, there has been some progress: got the mead bottle (more or less) finalized, and now I'm on to brandy.

The New Mead Bottle:

Wow. More than a month since the last update, and Skyrim's just over a couple of weeks away. Better get busy.

Don't fret though: I haven't spent all of my time playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and New Vegas (though most, I'll admit. There's just something about post-apocalyptic shooters, especially eastern European games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.). I've also been designing new bottles to round out the 1.3 release (though it might end up skipping a version and going straight to 1.4. See below for details. Regardless, the next version will round out the field, replacing any remaining bottles for vanilla Oblivion. I'm also making new labels for the beer, ail and mead bottles (the mead bottle with ironwork that I showed a month ago has now been re-assigned as Rosethorn mead, though it needs a few texture tweaks). To go with the new labels, I want to name the breweries/distilleries that these beverages are coming from, though I'm stumped on this one. So I'm issuing a challenge to the community: lend some names to these beverages (nothing from COBL please as this is a separate project). Best entries will end up the the 1.4 release with dedicated graphics.

Now, on to the screens:

Tentative Brandy Bottle: Tentative because I'm still tweaking the label and bottle textures. I also intend to modify the bottle using a newer technique I developed for the potion bottles.

Tentative Skooma Bottle: Long story short, something went horribly wrong when I was constructing the mesh for this one. Havok doesn't work, period. A full rebuild will hopefully clear the problem (everything else including my export settings seems fine, as evidenced by the brandy and potion bottles).

Potion Bottle: Brand new build style on this one; still the same mundane style of label. Unlike the other bottles though, this one isn't likely to get much fancier. I might add some text to it, though it won't be in English. Daedric maybe. Potion and poison can be crafted by just about alchemist for both personal use and profit, so I don't see a particular reason to add fancy labels to them.

Poison Bottle: (See Potion Bottle)

The only bottles to use the new method so far are the potion bottles. The change in construction is profound, since it require reworking the UV Map. As a result I'm freezing development on 1.3 and going straight to 1.4 with the new style. Watch this space: there's more to come.

Very nice work. Have you thought about putting the lettering in the normal map to get an embossed lettering effect, like http://www.antiquebottles.co.za/Pics/Brands/SAB_Antique.gif?

Thanks for the suggestion WyndChyme. I took it to heart and used it to add more detail to the potion bottles. Those are nearly finished now; just a couple of quest-based potions to be done, as well as the "Type D" potion bottles (for elixirs). I was originally planning to use alchemical symbols to represent both the types of potions and schools of magic, however I really couldn't find anything that related. I decided to go with the symbols used in Oblivion, but that left two problems: the first was that the labels were to be hand-written, so a stamped logo wouldn't really achieve the look I was going for, and second I stated at the start that I wanted to keep this project completely clear of content generated by Bethesda Softworks (thus allowing me to port the content to Skyrim after it comes out) The solution to both involved marker paper, a pigment liner and a whole lot of patience (so yes, all 7 of the logos including the alchemy logo were drawn by hand).

Now for the pics:

Potions, Poisons and Cures: Each gets its own kind of bottle, with each bottle varying based on the strength of the potion (with fancier bottles being used for strong potions, and more plain bottles used for weaker ones). I think at last count there were more than 200 meshes in the potions folder.

Icons: What are new meshes and textures without icons? Substantially less icons that actual bottles, mainly because you can't see the differences in text at that size.
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/061.jpg

Artwork: For easy classification, all potions poisons and cures are labeled with symbols of their associated school of magic. All bottles used for alchemical experiments are branded with the symbol for alchemy.

Wow, impressive work! You made me abandon my lurker-mode to post in here! :P

Already downloaded and I'll test in-game in a moment :)

Thank you very much for sharing your work! :goodjob:

PS: This thread doesn't get near enough replies as it deserves!

Thanks Leandro Conde. Always good to draw a lurker out of hiding :).

Wow, I swear I saw a tumbleweed roll past. This thread is about as empty as on of my WIP threads circa 2007. Anywho, been a couple of days. Time for another update.

I finished the last of the potion meshes last night, so Sinderion's elixirs can finally have the mesh they deserve. Now they just need icons, and the potions are done. Then its just a matter of polishing off the remaining bottles. With any luck, we'll get the penultimate release of Tamriellic Glassworks a week before Skyrim comes out (and none too soon).

The pics:

Elixir Bottle: You'll notice that the bottles seem to get brighter from one side of the screen to another. That's not a result of the lighting: the stronger the elixir, the stronger the glow.

Friday update. Unfortunately, no release tonight. Final textures on the drink bottles have proven time consuming (it's always the little things, isn't it?). New labels on the bottles now, though I'm not satisfied with the brandy bottle. Still tweaking that a bit. I've also got something conflicting with my mod over the brandy bottle and icon (looks COBL related somehow)

The Screens:

Beer, Mead and Ale Bottles: Final designs for all 3, complete with new labels. I ended up naming them based on 2 locations in the ES universe, and one fictional location hidden somewhere in Cyrodiil. The beer and ale I named after priories (Gottlefont and the fictional Saint Alesia), as during the middle ages monks were noted for producing such beverages, though Alessia Ottus may disagree. The mead is made in Falkreath, under the name "Watchet Stag").

Cyrodiilic Brandy: Still not satisfied with that label. Font needs to be changed, and I think the graphic needs a bit added. The name itself (Herennius) was used as an Imperial family name in Morrowind, but in fact comes from a roman emperor of the same name. The graphic is based off of Herennius`s likeness, taken from the image of a roman coin. I also chose the name because it bears more of a resemblance than any other Imperial name to Hennessy, the name of a famous cognac.

Saturday Update: The collection is growing. Finally satisfied with the new Brandy bottle. Also figured out what's going wrong with the plugin: Bethesda for some unknown reason actually created an original Cyrodiilic Brandy bottle and included it with the game, but never used it (maybe it's tied to the Playstation 3's memory issues. We'll probably never know); another mod in my load order is calling up that mesh, and overriding my plugin. To compensate, I intend to release two versions of the mesh path for the brandy bottle for the 1.4 release.

Screens:

Bottle Collection: Bottles show include the Wine Bottles ("Type D" or Cheap Wine), Potion and Poison Bottles ("Type A" and "Type C"), the Skooma Bottle and Drink Bottles ("Type A" or Beer/Ale, "Type C" or Cyrodiilic Brandy, and "Type D" or Mead). For the final release I'll be staging the entire collection of bottles.

Gearing up for the final release of both the core and DLC6 addon. Just a matter of making new icons for the wine bottles (to accommodate the altered labels), generate the medium and small texture packs and pack everything up. We should see this out either tonight or tomorrow.

The Lineup: The gang's all here, though I chose not to display all of the different variations on the potion and poison bottles; not enough counter space, and I think that the few that I do show get the point across nicely,

http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/079.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/080.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/081.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/082.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/083.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/084.jpg

The Wine Rack: Just a refresh of some screenshots which debuted in version 1.0 of the mod. Certainly has come quite a long way in that time.

http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/085.jpg | http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h360/Oriius/WIPz%20Tamriellic%20Glassworks/086.jpg

DLC6 Addon: The elixir bottles proved that the envmap2 material can still glow given the right textures to go with it; so I've added a new glow to the alchemic wines of Battlehorn Castle.

So 1.4 is out, and so is Skyrim. As I won't have access to Skyrim for over a month (long story), I figured that I might as well keep modding to keep myself busy. Here's a little something that I cooked up over the weekend: Daedric Lava Whiskey. Due out later this week (or sooner. Depends on whether or not my crash-happy CS feels like playing nice).

It Burns Going Down... In Ways No Mortal Has Ever Known: I decided that I could be a little less understated with this one, particularly as it is both a unique beverage (only 2 exist in the entire game) and it comes from another plane of existence. With my CS playing up, I replaced the mead bottle for the test shots. I also loaded up the lineup again for size comparison in a few of the shots.

Went up last night, but I didn't have time to post it here. The addon for DLC3: Wizard's Tower is now available, featuring a new mesh, texture and icon for Rindsey's famous Daedric Lava Whiskey. I'm also working on a hotfix which adds a mesh missing from the 1.4 core release (replacement for the standard potion bottle).
