Tes4Edit Directory Detection

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 4:31 am

My oblivion installation is not on my system drive, and as a result, Tes4Edit seems to not want to detect it. I feel like this is a simple question, yet my forays into Google, Tes4Edit guides, and the Search feature have yielded nothing. I feel like I have just overlooked something obvious because this seems like a potentially common problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
R

This typically only happens when you move the installation without going through the proper uninstall procedure. Windows has registry settings for the location of the game and that's what TES4Edit uses to detect it.

I don't have it handy or know where it's posted off hand, but you can modify the registry to point to the current location.

Hmmm..... not sure what could be wrong. I have Oblivion installed on two computers. On neither is either the game or tes4edit housed on my system drive. On one computer the game is on "I" partition", on the other "V" (an SSD dedicated solely to the game). On both computers tes4edit resides on the "F" partitiion of my primary drive. On both computers tes4edit has worked like a charm from day-one.

Where is your tes4edit installed?

ADDENUM: Aye, Arthmoor's input sounds highly plausible. I've had a mods change Oblivion's installation path in Windows Registry and cause the game to not launch. Had to use regedit and manually switch the path back. Regedit's search function should eventually find the entry you need to alter (assuming that is indeed the problem). Might want to back up the registry first.

Of course you mention nothing of the game itself not launching, so I might well be wrong here.

Thanks for the replies.
I think the windows registry is the issue. I upgraded from Windows XP to 7 about a month ago and the installation I'm trying to use this with was restored from a backup. Tes4Edit is trying to point to Program files(x86)/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion, which was the location I tried creating a new clean install of oblivion after the upgrade. I'll try to figure out how to edit the registry.

EDIT: I poked around in the registry, and I'm not sure what key i should be looking for. Wrye, Boss, and OBMM, (which all work fine) have registry keys that give them a path and those all point to the proper install of oblivion. I found no such keys for Tes4Edit

HKLM\Software\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Installed Path

OR

HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Installed Path

TES4Edit probably reads those.

Yep, that entry in registry has to be edited if you moved your Oblivion with copy/paste or something. I've had to do it too.
