NIFOpt vs. PyFFI

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 2:31 pm

I think that a similar topic has been posted before, but:

Has anyone tried parallel mesh optimizations through NIFOpt and PyFFI? If so, what strengths/weaknesses did you see from each approach?
I've been considering putting my already-PyFFI'd meshes through NIFOpt to see what will happen.

Additionally--what benefits have you seen from the texture optimization in NIFOpt?

I did a bit of testing there but not quite what you are looking for, I did not compare any results between Pyffi and NIFOpt, but the compression was amazing.

Stability of the game grew steadily worse though the more meshes I threw at it (ignore the problems reference body mods they were later found to be my fault) .. So I ran out of time to be doing this stuff and reverted to PyFFI

I uploaded 4 Process Monitor logs as suggested to try and help Ethatron pin down any problem meshes - They have not been downloaded from rapidshare though so I guess Ethatron became busy elsewhere too.

Yes, I want to have DDSopt rock-stable currently. As all these programs BSAopt/DDSopt are say sub-sets or part-of NIFopt, technically I do work on NIFopt, just not on the meshes. I'm sorry for it but I will go back to support Skyrim in NIFopt just after DDSopt goes 1.0 and then I'm going to fix the mesh things once and for all.

One good thing I'll take over from DDSopt is the "constraints"-tab. I imagine one could set a specific degree of optimization for face-meshes for example, and another for clutter. Just be patient a bit. The amount of code to manage and support to give starts to show as well, not that much, but a little.

You have a limit on the rs stuff? I can download and then you delete.

Ooh no, not at all, I can keep them up for whenever you need them, I just did not know for sure if they were still going to be useful or if you still intended using. I do know how busy you have been though, and wondered if you had started specializing in each parts possible problems to perfect the whole capability ..

Off topic but I just downloaded DDSOpt 0.6.1 this evening with a view to running a few groups of textures through this weekend, love the idea of the new scaling possibilities - The amount of immensely sized textures out there which could be used by a lot more people with heavily modded games if only they were one size smaller .. Your tool makes the possibility of doing that a breeze by the sound of it.
