Oblivion with Skyrim Enhanced Shaders

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 2:10 pm

I've been asked to make a lightweight Oblivion installation but vanilla oblivion graphics hit me quite hard, I even forgot how it looks since OBGE is always in my setup. So I decided to check for alternatives and ended with http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=822 from tapioks (I like this guy for his New Vegas mods).
There are 3 different versions available:
1) with ENB version 100+, which is used in most other enhancers for Skyrim. Unfortunatly it relies on some internal Skyrim shader registers and shows only a grey screen in Oblivion, however I suppose it is easy to fix for Ethatron or other OBGE gurus...
2) ENB v0.96 with palette tonemapping. Works in oblivion but I don't like tonemapping (color tint/mood). But there are tons of palettes available in internet (google enbpalette.bmp file), and some of them indeed look quite nice.
3) http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/download.php?id=7773 - thats the version I like the most, boosts color range and sharpens picture a bit. http://i.imgur.com/TxofL.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/hrRv6.jpg (toggle with Shift+F12 in game). And it doesn't hurt my FPS at all, can limit FPS if you don't use OSR for some reason, and have a neat FPS counter (toggle with numpad *).
So if you want some eye-candy but can't install or properly use OBGE this can be a solution. It is still an ordinary (though I believe updated) ENB series plugin, so settings are adjustable in enbseries.ini

p.s. I would still recommend to spend some time on OBGE, it is just so much better for Oblivion.

I honestly don't think shader mods are worth the extra overhead when the multitude of texture and environmental mods out there make the game look stunning. However, if you don't want to run any graphical mods then shader mods may be worth it.

To be honest the only thing I ever used OBGE for was the Water mod. I think Realistic Water looks better and doesn't impact my performance like OBGE does. I also think that All Natural does a better job of changing the color mood than the ENBSeries method. I feel the same way about New Vegas and Project Reality/Enhanced Shaders. This is all just my opinion, so feel free to disagree.

P.S. Where can you get that Diablo-style UI

Realistic Water is awesome, but OBGE Water is the best so far. Only OBGE Water actually smooths the shoreline by replacing water shader, while other water mods use default water shader which shows obvious edge at the shoreline. OBGE Water even looks better than vanilla water does in Skyrim. However, OBGE Water hits FPS seriously due to its high quality.

Excellent! Thanks zilav, I was wondering if Skyrim Enb would work for OB but I never really sat down and tried it. Going back to OB was a shock for me too. I can't bear to play OB without some kind of post-processing. I don't need dramatic changes, but just enough to bring the scene together.

This is Skyrim Enhanced Shaders HDR Version at default settings (OB's HDR and bloom are disabled) plus standalone Screen Effects 1.01 with these settings:

Brightness: 1.20
Shadows: 71
Highlights: 71
Contrast: 1.35
Saturation: 0.65
Blur: 0.02

The weather and fog are from All Natural.

Could be better, but I'm happy right now... will tweak later.

I doubt that Screen Effects can be standalone since it requires OBGE, and if you just want to alter brightness/contrast/saturation it is much easier to add ScreenEffects.fx shader code to ENB's effects.txt with minor tweaking. Or even use similar shaders from "FXAA injector" which works (I think) with Oblivion too.
But I'd rather modify effects.txt, the less overhead for system and more stable game this way.

Ooooh! Where did you get that sixy compass texture? It's not in the HSB archive, I know that...

It would make http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6172/screenshot9dh.jpg sooo much better.
