Worth the effort to PyFFI meshes DLC BSA files

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 7:08 pm

Out of curiosity, is there a consensus as to whether it's worth the effort to unpack the BSAs from the Official non-Shivering Isles DLCs and run them through the PyFFI optimize script? Is it something some people do or not really worth the time? There are only a relatively small number of meshes in the BSAs in question.

As an aside, I'm in the process of reinstalling Oblivion with BAIN as I had to replace my hard drive. Been thinking about making the switch from OBMM for a while. I knew it would be better just based on the feature list, but I really had no idea how much better until I started using it in earnest.

Probably not because none of the DLCs add a lot of content all over the place in the game. It's not just about the size though. For example, clutter mods that add a lot of clutter throughout the game, the actual models may be few, but the number of references or copies in the game is great, so then they'd be worth PyFFI-optimizing. Still, in this case, I don't think you need to bother with those.

Happy gaming!

Edit: There are already plenty of mods for which it is worth it to clean with TES4Edit and optimize with PyFFI...

Not sure what the consensus is but I have. But then I've pretty much PyFFI'd all the meshes from the mods in my install. And will continue to do so. The way I figure is that as long as I can keep them in a separate subpackage I can always go back to the oringinal meshes if there's a problem.

Oh yes, I definitely PyFFI plenty of mods. I was just pondering whether people bothered doing it to the official DLCs. I was leaning toward doing it and then thought I might be going overboard. ;-)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I'd say to do it. It may be true that DLCs don't add a lot of new meshes, but that also means it wouldn't take very long to run through PyFFI. I have noticed some small improvements in Knights of the Nine and Fighter's Stronghold after PyFFIing both.

Oh, well, I don't think that that would be going overboard at all. If you want to do it, go ahead. For me, I would put that off until I have a setup I'm content to play with for a while because I PyFFI-optimization takes a long time, and I'd rather be sure that I'm going to be using whatever I take time optimizing.
