How much did we know before Morrowind?

When I first heard of The Elder Scrolls universe, Morrowind was already out and on its way to being game of the year. When I stumbled upon it, I was thrilled as the main quest developed into an epic story and all that jazz. I remember being very very excited for Oblivion, but always feeling a tad bit guilty that I knew what the gist of the plot was before the game was released.

This time around, I'm once again very very excited, but, once again, feeling guilty that I know the general idea of the plot of Skyrim before it has been released.
(You're the dragon born, dragons are coming to eat the world, civil war in Skyrim).

So, to the topic. I was not here for the information given before the release of Morrowind, but, I wonder, was it anything like what we see on these forums? Did Bethesda tell us about being a child of prophecy for Morrowind as well?

And yes, I searched the Morrowind forums for quite a bit. I decided this would be the place to get the quickest answer as well as discuss the differences between what we knew then and what we know now.

the plots of Oblivion and Skyrim are layed out in the Books of morrowind and oblivion as well as some of the characters, the Mythic dawn was mentioned in morrowind, and the book doors of Oblivion details many Deadric spears as well as a chilling remark on the end of all things.

It was Apocrypha. The home of Hermaeus-Mora, where all forbidden knowledge can be found. I felt a shudder in my mind, but I could not tell if it was my master's or mine.

Morian Zenas never traveled to another realm that I know of.

Throughout his visits to the first four realms, my master spoke to me constantly. Upon entering the Apocrypha, he became quieter, as he was lured into the world of research and study, the passions that had controlled his heart while on Nirn. I would frantically try to call to him, but he closed his mind to me.

Then he would whisper, 'This cannot be …'

'No one would ever guess the truth …'

'I must learn more …'

'I see the world, a last illusion's shimmer, it is crumbling all around us …'
