Mixed BAIN and Omod install?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 2:55 am

Hi,

I'm in the process of reinstalling Oblivion so that I can play the OOO 1.35 beta. I thought I'd use the opportunity to finally get to grips with BAIN installation. The problem is that most of the mods I want to use are archived as pre made Omods., so I can literally install with one click. For OOO, and any old mods that have been updated in the last 6 months I would like to use BAIN.

Is there any problem with using a mixed BAIN/Omod install? I will of course also be using BOSS.

You could do that, but you'd be crippling one of BAIN's best features: mod conflict handling. I recommend you convert all your OMOD's to archives and then install the archives with BAIN. You could have a look and see if your mods have been updated before converting them to archives and grab the newer version as a BAIN package or manual archive. Some mods have BAIN conversion scripts or wizards, so you might try searching Nexus for those too.

You can convert an OMOD to an archive by right-clicking on the OMOD and selecting Convert to Archive.

There's not a problem using an OMOD/BAIN combo but it does have shortcomings if uninstalling something. With OMOD you can accidentally remove resources and features that another mod may depend on. Plus BAIN handles mod conflicts.
Really, it's best to go with the one if your staring a fresh installation, and that would be BAIN as it gives far more overall control.

alt3rn1ty's pictorial guide will give you a pretty good walkthrough on what to be aware of and how to convert your files into BAIN ready format. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230

OK. Thanks for the advice. Looks like I've got some work/research to do.
