Lonesome Roads, disparity between reviewers and the communit

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 2:40 am

By the looks of this forums, I`d say Lonesome Roads was generally well received, and even considered one of the best dlc of New Vegas. What I find absurd and ridiculous, if how big reviewers all rated this DLC a awful mark. How can it make sense that our opinions and their ratings are near contradictory?!

What do you have say people?

Note: I'm not exactly 100% sure of the community's reaction or feelings, so sorry if I misinterpreted it.

Everyone has there own opinion about something, although the vast majority of people enjoyed the DLC, some people didn't.

For example, I don't like Battlefield, or COD, but the vast majority of people do. Same thing goes for any game or DLC. You'll see alot of people lean either towards really good or everyone will say, really bad. I like to think that's the case because bigtime fans usually go to the forum(s) of the game that they like the most. :)

It's because of all the hype. Advertise something enough and idiots around the world will start to think that it's going to be perfect. Well, here's some news: nothing is.

Every time, especially if it's delayed, a hyped game or part of it will get mixed reception.
Some will dislike it because it wasn't Christ's second coming, some dislike it for the sake of being different. Some are just those who pick one flaw and judge the entire product with it. And of course when talking about entire products many dislike it based on taste - that's "normal" of course.
Personally I liked Lonesome Road quite a bit. It had much Fallout feeling in it, like the Pitt. A bleak ruintown with pre-war artifacts and skeletons lying about, and a nice story even if I didn't want to listen to Ulysses ramble.

Lonesome Road tells us about a package from the west and that's the whole basis of the plot and nothing more. So the story is very weak but the character development minus ED-E is pretty good.

But I would take game reviewers opinions with a grain of salt, because they all are mindless dumb asses that think COD is the highest standard of gaming.

I offer no illusion that Lonesome Road is my least favorite of the DLCs, and I'm a guy who damn near broke his keyboard during a few minutes of Dead Money.

The story was way too contrived for my tastes. I respect anyone with a story to tell but what "happened" to the Divide being never mentioned or known by the major players of the Mojave Wasteland seems far-fetched even for my generous suspension of disbelief. As a more ludicrous example it would be like going through the entire game looking for Caesar and then when you get to the Fort, YOU ARE CAESAR! A really painfully obvious thing that people probably should've been able to point out to you prior to "The End."

I get that they wanted to end New Vegas with a bang, and they certainly did. I've since "written" around it so that it's a lot less linear in my personal line of canon but it's definitely my Mothership Zeta of New Vegas - though at least I keep it installed and play through it.

My two caps.

I enjoyed Lonesome Road, but not to extent that most others did. It's probably my least favourite of the New Vegas DLCs.

So yeah.

I havnt read the reviews, so I dont know what they are complaining about. I LOVE the setting and the opponents,
but I HATE the plot holes and "crimes" (I dont know the proper word) against established lore, oh ,and the attempt to retcon my characters background.

Keep your dirty hands away from my character, Obsidian!! You can take away his brain but dont touch his past!! :swear:

But when I decided that detonating warhead did cause lasting radiation, that my motivation for entering the Divide was prospecting and stopped paying attention to anything Ulysses said ever (sic), then it was fun and eerie.

Lonesome road was average... not as boring as hh, as it hold good gameplay and was fun overall. clearly under DM or OWB...

I get the feeling that some reviewers DON'T play the whole DLC just a few hours and they may not have played FNV in the fisrt place.

I'm sure if someone gave me a 45 minute snippet from some t.v. series halfway thru the series or at the end I would not give it a objective rating.

As it has been stated earlier..also depends on the reviewer's personal preference. They may not like Fallout or RPG's at all. You have to really enjoy the basic game to buy the DLC's typically.

Having said that I would say that most who post here love FNV and have some DLC's they love and hate and say "meh...its ok".

I personally feel Lonesome Road and Dead Money had some of the better stories. To reconcile the character plot thing, let's consider Ulysses:

What is known:
Ulysses saw hope in the Divide.
The Divide was destroyed by it's own nukes.
The Courier passed through the Divide at some time.
Ulysses is extremely stalker-ish and reminds me of some serial killers.
Ulysses blames The Courier for the destruction of The Divide.
NCR and Legion were both present in The Divide.

What is not known:
That we should believe anything Ulysses says.
That The Courier actually did pass through the Divide and someone bearing a similar name or face didn't.
That there ever was a second survivor of The Divide.

Frankly, the facts do not match up for Ulysses telling us the truth, only what he believes the truth is. Ergo, Ulysses survived a nuclear detonation, and needed someone to blame for the destruction of his hope, which may have been an accident. Ulysses settled on The Courier for some reason, and then spent years tracking her, hunting her, luring her to his "lair", the ruins of The Divide. Whereupon he planned to kill her after putting her through hell(you just try making it to his fricking temple without getting that impression). Therefore, since Ulysses shares traits with people like Patrick Bates, who was also insane and unable to see reality, why would Ulysses be able to interpret reality accurately?

OT: I feel Lonesome Road complements the other DLCs quite well, and that reviewers who don't enjoy the base game shouldn't be asked to try the DLCs. I much appreciated seeing the old F3 textures coming back in an interesting, sensible way, and felt more...right crawling through the ruins of a city than a fantastically preserved Las Vegas.

Honestly LR is BAD. I enjoyed it, more than HH obviously, and still I can't say wich one was the worst (kidding, obviously, but still).
LR was like "Dallas" or any other boring soap tv show. A "new" character (yes it's new, not even ONE of the ulysse related hint pointed to this "thing") is psychotic and want to kill you (for wathever reason) The gameplay was good... but seriously, not worth much. Sad the guys who have created Planescape Torment did this thing... No story, a map making no sense at all ("walk west" another funny quote of Ulysse...)

Probably not, as they want to get their review written and published/posted as early as possible.

I thought the main plot-story elements in LR were the weakest. Felt to contrived to me. But the divide fits alot better in the Fallout universe than much of NV and the other DLCs. OWB and LR are definitely my favorites given the environments alone. OWB mixes in the silliness that I am used to getting from Fallout while LR provides the sentimentality (from ED-E's clone) with the extremely bleak environs of the divide. One of my gripes is I think the marked men could have been developed better. There was alot of potential story there. Maybe included some actual Divide resident NPC's that knew your character prior to the incident.

Overall with the content being finished I am happy with all my NV DLC expenditures as I am still building new characters and the options are thoroughly enjoyable.

I liked playing through LR, but even after I heard the whole story, I stil didn't know what exactly was going on. It could have been a lot more developed, especially considering how many times it was delayed. I would have liked to actually meet people from The Divide- it may have helped the story become more interesting.

Everyone has their own opinions. Reviewers only do their job.
I bought Deus Ex: HR because the game was well-received and got scores like 9/10 on review sites. And I was disappointed.
Now it's exactly the other way around, LR was short but still the most awesome DLC to me, while reviewers often had other opinions.
