Morrowind Thief, is this a good idea?

I'm planning on a new mod that would create a more rewarding Morrowind for thieves.

When playing Morrowind, I noticed that when you break into homes you only find maybe a couple coins and a useless weapon. I was thinking of overhauling that idea, and creating more rewards when breaking into homes, which could lead to scavenger quests or any type of quests. Basically, I want to give Morrowinders that feeling that whenever they see a locked door, they WANT to break in and explore, since it could lead to something fun.

This is a huge task to embark on, but is it one I should take? I'd be taking almost every locked, empty home and either placing more loot there (like arrows or coins), having something in the home that leads to a quest, or a secret door that leads to something rare.

Meh, I may have to think about it, all I am nervous about are conflicts.

The idea to make the game more interesting for a thief is a good one, but I'd rarther go for unique items and getting quests than spamming Vvardenfall with another gazillion loot items. There already is so much stuff to collect ingame, that it really gets boring. Each house and each cave has all kind of weapons, scrolls and whatever. ;)

Agreed, I don't think there should just be more items. Make it interesting by relying on the items as little as possible. Perhaps overhauling the actual interiors to be unique (vague idea I know :P). And then as TDW suggested having unique items or maybe small simple quests (such as the stolen http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:The_Silver_Bowl).

Just my 2 cents...

That's true. I'm mostly annoyed by the fact that pickpocketing isn't more prevalent in the Morrowind universe, and was hoping to create more pickpocket opportunities in the game.

I'm halfway through my town mod, and was loving the thief action I was putting into it. I thought that a Morrowind with hundreds of places to search for rares would be fun, but at the same time the game is broken enough when it comes to loot. Also, I'd possibly conflict with hundreds of mods, so it is not worth the time and effort for a mod that will break everything.

Still, I may pursue this mod in a different way...like have NPCs in the major towns that ask for keys from EVERY NPC in town, so you have to be creative in finding the keys. It could be on the NPC, or it could be in plain view in their house. Hmm...may have to try it.

Hehe, grabbing keys from all the NPCs is always fun. I've done that with many of my characters...

Funny, ive just started playing morrowind from the start from the first time in years. And ive chosen an Argonian theif as my character, and i loot everything from every house i can find, even if it not locked, and my bartering skills are amazing :P

Ive made in the last 2 hours over 5000 gold :P

But i don't think adding loads of new items around the place will make it more interesting. I think improved AI and physics will make playing as a thief more interesting.

Bring on OpenMW

I've actually been working on making more unique interiors for standard vanilla houses a little at a time. I've mostly been using house mods; deleting the exteriors, cut/pasting the interiors into an existing interior house cell, then doing the external and interior modding to make insides of houses match outsides, replace NPCs and quest items, ownership markers, scripts, whatever. I'd be really really excited to see a mod that used an approach like this; making the houses themselves and the NPCs (via their stuff and quests) more interesting, rather than just giving me more stuff to sell.
