Fire Ants in New Vegas....

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 2:48 pm

The answer is quite obivious, Obsidian had limited time and limited resources to make New Vegas so its based off Fallout 3's data files. The fire ants were among that data and no one bothered to check on the origin when they decided to include the creatures in NV.

Isn't it possible the guy in Fallout 3 wasn't telling us the whole truth about the number of Queens he was working on?
Well technically he said he was directly injecting eggs. There was no fire ant queen in Fallout 3 just a regular giant ant queen well as regular as a giant ant can be. Another possibility was a male fire ant flew to the Mojave ant mated with one of the local giant red ants becoming fire ants.

Heheh, actually, I brought up this very topic way back when it was first released. It was a very lengthy discussion which if I recall right ended up being a 'they used them for the rule of cool' situation. I'll see if I can't pull it up.

I do lol it really bugs me
Oh you. :teehee:

3) A queen from DC flew all the way to the Mojave.

The third I feel is the most likely.
I agree, number three seems plausible. I imagine the fire ants would have been much more successful in the wasteland than the usual giant ants, and it isn't a stretch to think that the mutated strain could have spread across the country in the four years between the games.

Actually, while traveling across the Mojave, I came across a crazy-looking man, who told me this riveting tale:

Once, long ago, months after the Great War, Geckos snuck into a military base that leaked FEV, like you said. Before discovering the FEV vats, however, the geckos came across a colony of ants. Having no place to stay, the geckos took up residence with the ants. Things heated up quickly, and war was quickly declared once a gecko was caught eating Arnold, one of the head ants. This war was long and hard, and many on both sides died, fighting valiantly for their race. Eventually, they both found the FEV vats. For a time, they ignored them, but once one of the ants crawled in and evolved surprisingly quickly into a giant, fire-breathing ant, the geckos were quick to take hold of the vats and use them to their advantage. The ants managed to take hold of one, and soon they were both giant, fire-breathing variants of the original race.

The end.

Nice story. but I think Ill go with the flyaway queen laying down a nest in the Mojave.. lol.

At El Dorado dry lake their is a army tuck, is it possible something (perhaps reconn rocket fuel from crash?) was on this tuck and was eaten by local ants, thus givening them fire breath.

there are also severa radiation/toxic waste dumps nearby perhaps this mutanted them aswell?

I believe they came from DC.... And I think they expain why the Fire Gekoe's breath fire... becasue they eat the ants... an ant that size might taste like chicken.... My courior did make afew ant dishes... such as Fire ant fricassée... And someone said afew posts back... can't remember who.. but he has a raptor Avator... Raptor Dino... anyway he said that fallout 3's story was flawed.... I don't think so..... in my mind... When Bethesda took over the fallout series... There first game... is the start of fallout... I did play fallout 2.. but htat was years ago.. and i can't even remeber anything about it.... I would like to see in Fallout 4 a return to the east cost.... New York would be off the hook... And I like the broodhood members on the east cost.. they arn't stubbern close minded morons, like they appear to be in the mojavi... I helped them tho.. they have good people

Ok then a ant "King" mated with a normal Queen and it spread that way. He could have also tried with an ant queen first and she got away but never told us about it. Or one of the eggs the queen had, became a fire ant queen.

If he was injecting individual eggs? Then why did he create so many? One would think that after so many failures, you would give up and try something else. So he could have injected an ant queen and she became a fire ant queen. Or she laid an egg that hatched into a fire ant queen.

Also Fire Geckos have nothing to do with fire ants! Fire Geckos were in Fallout 2. So if DC is where fire ants came from, then Fire Geckos in Fallout 2 could not have been eating the fire ants, because the ants did not exist yet.

It isn't very important in the grand scheme of things but I am surprised there isn't an in game explanation

In this case it is good to have a little mystery. Fire Ants in the Mojave to me continues Fallout 3's quest "Those!" Which is a take on a classic movie "Them" in which the threat of giant ants spreading all over America was the point of the movie. Giant Queen ants had to be hunted down and destroyed before their young would become uncontrolable in a very short time. A Queen was said to be able to fly across the united states.

I like to think that Dr. Lesko injected an egg with his FEV, that egg hatched into a Queen Ant, and she got away. So now thanks to him, there could be colonies all over the wasteland. Bugs reproduce really fast, now add the unknown effects of FEV and radiation/Science! wouldn't need much time to spread such a large distance.

The one thing I would like to know is where Dr. Lesko got his FEV in the first place. That part was never explained in Fallout 3.

What Fire Ants became literal Fire Ants over the course of 200 years, tons of radiation and all those years being hunted by bigger predators. Gee I wonder why they developed such a defensive technique.

Good question though I wondered this before but never asked.

I am sorry. Fallout 3 just has alot of plotholes and horrible writing, it just stands out so much to me, so I can't help but notice it and ask, WTH?
