Replayability or maybe?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 6:40 pm

Well, I remembered two years ago I rented Fallout 3 from a movie outlet and I had mixed feelings on it. It seems cool, and a twist on a shooter, which I generally despise. It quickly became addicting and I played nonstop and had to rent it twice to beat it. I do remember being disappointed that the story was done and what I was given as a story. And I really felt there was not much replayabiltity. Sniper sneak was the best build for damage. And power armor was downplayed, just like in Fallout 3 new vegas.

Now, I rented Fallout 3 new vegas a week ago, played about 35 hours on it and didn't even make it to the strip. The story was much more enjoyable, but I still found flaws. Snipe/sneak best build and my energy trotting warrior created piles of dust everywhere... slowed down my outdated xbox. Plus I don't know if there is much replayablity in the game.

So hear I sit... on steam looking at fallout 3 new vegas delux edition for 40 bucks trying to decide if it would be a waste. Plus I play on a labtop with a general video card and I don't even know if it will work.

So, what do you think?

Side comment: How do you get over melee being so silly and unrealistic. Granted lazors are laughable but there is a reason for the addage of bringing a knife to a gun fight ha ha

Fallout New Vegas is re-playable in that it takes at least 3 plays to see the complete parts of Acts Two and Three of the MQ. It is only after you reach the strip that the real choices in the MQ present themselves. Even then, you can play it through several ways.

However, I have over 300 hours in the game and have yet to actually complete the MQ (I have done up to the final door twice). Most of the time, I just roll a character and play the game and ignore most of the MQ.

I enjoyed both games, but NV was a better experience, especially with the DLC's added in.

As for your laptop, if you can get FO3 or Oblivion to run on it, then you can run the game.

First off, it's not "Fallout 3 New Vegas". It's a series of which Fallout 3 was (you guessed it) the third main title. Fallout: New Vegas is a different installment. Plus it's just confusing to see two game title mashed together like that. I wasn't sure which game you were talking about at first glance.

Second, yes, there is a ton of re-playability. There are many story options and you can milk multiple playthroughs from it.

Third, your laptop will probably be more taxed by the game than your XBOX, unless it's powerful one.

Ah forgive my ignorance on the title. I actually thought it was the same installment but different parts of the world. But I blame my tiredness for the errors.

I ever wonder if I could have cross moral grounds into the Legion's army. Always so hard to play the bad guy. As I never had the nerve to blow up megaton.

I would like to try it on PC however, so I can find a mod to clean up ash piles

I don't mean to say you're doing it wrong, but you kind of are. Don't take that the wrong way though, I'm not insinuating that you're stupid or anything, I mean on my first play-through of Fallout 3 (that was the first Bethesda game/RPG I ever played) I pretty much did everything wrong for the first ~30 hours of game time. I was killed repeatedly by a raider with a Chinese pistol for God's sake!

Anyways, I'll start with your question of replayability, and the answer is yes, the game has a huge replayability factor. As CCNA mentioned at least 3 playthroughs are required to see most of the Main Quest outcomes, but I would say 4 or even 5 playthroughs are required to see everything the the Main Quest has to offer. That said, the MQ doesn't disappoint -- it's filled with well written dialogue, allusions, satire, and morally gray choices that will get you thinking about which faction (if any) is really the best for the Mojave.

I have done ~7 play-throughs of the game so far and I'm still enjoying it and continuing to start new play-throughs. Why? you may ask; well it's because New Vegas is a Role-Playing Game, so I can play the game in a virtually unlimited number of ways and still have a different experience. That also goes for combat. You can play through the game using only melee weapons, or play through it using only energy weapons, or you could wear only light armor and take all of the perks that benefit light armor characters. You can even go through the whole game as a pacifist, never stabbing, shooting, or vaporizing anyone or anything.

Side comment: How do you get over melee being so silly and unrealistic. Granted lazors are laughable but there is a reason for the addage of bringing a knife to a gun fight ha ha

So that leads to my next point: that all of the weapon categories are balanced in Fallout: New Vegas. This means that a Melee Weapons based character can go through the game and be just as effective as a character who specializes in Energy Weapons. Just because Energy Weapons seem like they should completely outclass every other weapon class in the game, they don't. In fact, many argue that Energy Weapons are too under powered when compared to Guns due to there being a greater variety of Guns skill weapons, ammo for guns being cheaper, and guns being far more durable while dealing just as much damage as their energy weapons counterpart.

So you might not want to bring a knife to a gun fight, but bringing a Super Sledge, Chainsaw, or Thermic Lance isn't a bad idea.

Oh, I do roleplay infact! Quite heavily if that is what you are saying I am doing wrong. It was my appeal to the Fallout series after playing Oblivion. Just generally rent games because I get scared I will buy a bad game and I tend to be extremely conservative. (Bought Skyrim and wished I waited 5 months for the price to drop) So I had to play through Fallout 3 quickly to get to the story.

But unlike Oblivion, from what I recall, once you defeated the main quest, you were done.

And like I stated which was probably subtle enough not to catch, I could never roleplay a character running at someone with a gun. Just seemed silly. But I guess you can cripple a head shots too and wander around. If they really wanted to make fallout realistic.. internal bleeding ha.

The reason I really like Fallout New Vegas better is the hardcoe mode and story, so I agree.

Shall I post my computer stats in the Tech forums to see if it is even close to be able to be played?

Wonder what they would need to know. I have a nagging feeling it won't be able to handle it

tons of replayability. i have more hours and playthroughs than i can count (or care to admit). especially since you said you like to role play your characters, you will find many ways to finish quests that would be consistent with whatever character you're playing. FNV's flexibility allows so many options.

melee is not my preferred method of combat, but there are some amazing melee weapons. i have to admit, it does seem weird at first taking bullets as i charge to an enemy, but a little suspension of disbelief and you're all good. this isn't a simulator after all.

i can't answer your tech questions, but i'm sure someone can help. try the issues and tech board, as this question has been asked many, many times.

This makes me sad. The thing about New Vegas is that every main faction has a downside, so there is no "white-knight, BoS, good guy" quest line to do. Every faction has cons and pros, it's up to the character's morals that you give him/her that decides if the faction you choose is right or wrong, good or bad. NCR are not the good guys. The Legion are not the bad guys. Mr. House, NCR, Yes Man, and Caesar's Legion are all complex factions with no way to say "This faction. This is the right one." -- and that's the beauty of New Vegas.

You could be neutralistic and claim each fraction is a shade of grey, but that could be said upon most things in life. Taking is slaves, murdering women and children in total warfare and even absorbing and eliminating culture is evil and dark. Granted I haven't played the entirety of the series to see the horrors of NCR.

If the NCR did follow with the "old way" of democracy, each hold rights and the right to culture... ect. Then it is good. But of course there are flaws with any system held by a human.

And if you would love to... fill me in on the horrors of NCR I will love to hear them 8).

I should throw in... to some people, it is ok to murder others for surival. Is that evil, who knows. But I never want to get in a philosophical debate on a game forum.

I found Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas both replayable, New Vegas moreso because of the choices and different results of the MQ. I think New Vegas is a better Fallout game overall. I haven't completed the MQ for NV yet.

Actually, one of the main points of the game/DLC is that that is the NCR's main flaw. I don't want to spoil too much of the game or DLCs for you, but keep an open mind when you play, and try to hear all the sides out before declaring them "good" or "evil." Talk to Caesar. You might end up agreeing with him.

Well, Tycho. You actually hit the nail on the head with a flaw I found with the game. I didn't meet up with legion until much later in the game and already heard amples of negativity from about them. An by the time I first saw them.. they slaughtered an entire town. Granted the people weren't good but poor way to meet.

The ONLY person who will give you the good sides of the Legion is Caesar himself. The others are followers, not leaders, and thus they can't properly articulate themselves to explain why they do what they do.

What Longknife said sums it up. Caesar is very intelligent and is able to clearly explain the motives of his Legion and why its actions and beliefs are ultimately "good" in the long haul. The reason you meet the Legion by seeing the greatest of their cruelties was, imo, to test players as to how open minded they can be. I didn't even talk to Caesar until my second play-through because I was disgusted by the Legion during my first. But once I did speak with Caesar, I understood the motives behind what his Legion was doing, and I saw how well it could work, and then those atrocities didn't seem quite as bad -- or at least not like they were mindless acts of torture that served no purpose...they definitely serve a purpose.

Thesis and antithesis....You'll see, again, I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you.

I don't agree with Caesar at all. Slavery is horrible. Their Luddite views are understandable to an extent. But they think everyone except them is wrong, Caesar's Legion is ethnocentric.

I think you should get the Ultimate Edition. FNV is not for everyone, but from your comments it seems like you're enjoying it so far. And without spoiling anything, it gets much better after you reach the Strip.

You could be neutralistic and claim each fraction is a shade of grey, but that could be said upon most things in life. Well, the factions are all shades of grey (mostly - the Followers in-game seem to be pure good), but some factions are a darker shade of grey than the others. In my opinion it's pretty clear that NCR's shade of grey is much lighter than that of the Legion (as shown in-game), but you'll find other people who disagree quite vehemently.

But I never want to get in a philosophical debate on a game forum.
New Vegas is a game that lends itself to this kind of discussion though, which is part of why it's so awesome.

IMO that's not the Legion's main problem. I would say, rather, that the problem with the Legion is that it is hopelessly anachronistic. (I'm not talking about their self-consciously Roman aesthetic, but about their methods and goals.)

With the amount of factions and optional outcomes of each quest there is a lot of room for replayability. The PC version is even better because you can get mods. You will probably find that perks and SPECIAL are more important in this game than FO:3.

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
