Can people steal my stuff that I leave lying around. e.g. I was in Nipton, I seen a cool home, but was afraid to drop high priced items in it. Do people actually go in your homes? What if I live in a outside trailer? Can they steal my stuff then? Can you clear this up for me? Thnx guys.

If you store your stuff in the Lucky 38 with your companions then they may take stuff and the same goes for anywhere that other NPCs frequent. There wouldn't be anyone wlaking around in Nipton so no one would take your stuff, but there are also only a few places that have safe storage. I'd recommend sticking with Novac, Harper's Shack, the Lucky 38 or anywhere else you are absolutely sure has safe storage containers. You could also just be a true wanderer and keep everything with you.

Get Honest Hearts first. I've been told everything levels with you so you should be able to do it. As for the other one either OWB or DM. Lonesome Road is supposed to be played last, if I'm not wrong.

A related question: are there any good houses/shacks near New Vegas (as in, near the Strip, Freeside, Westside etc.)? I've been storing my stuff in the mailbox at the Strip gate, but it seems like a unrealistic place to store stuff. The Lucky 38 is out because it's so annoying to get to.
