You should definitely try them out. They're rather cheap and well worth their money, even after ten years.

Depending on what you liked about Fallout 3 you will love Fallout 1 and 2. If you're into storytelling, great dialogue, proper incorporation of the SPECIAL system and specializing your character to do different things and don't mind playing a turn-based/ISO game, you'll be satisfied for months. Well, at least I was.

Try it out and keep going. Don't give up after an hour. When I first played I almost threw it away, I didn't get how things worked and turnbased wasn't that appealing to me. But after a while I picked it up again, put my mind to it and kept on playing. You'll get used to the turnbased combat and Fallout has done it rather different from most turnbased games. I'm not a big fan of turnbased combat but in Fallout I felt it was really enjoyable, it just took some time to grow on me.

O man I really miss Turn Based combat. I like the feeling of how it sort of played like a modified chess game, only when you got to level 21 in Fallout 1 it felt like your front line was all queens and you rocked everyone's world. I remember playing a dude like Leon from the Professional and I would kill the drug dealers I met, and I thought Dogmeat was a little girl... OK to much info...

You want to make sure you download all the most up-to-date patches, but they run fine for me even on Vista, so I think they should also work just fine on XP.

It will work on XP. You have to change it to run in Windows 98/ME mode.

Here is how...

Go to All Programs> Go to the place where your Fallout 1 or 2 file is at> Right click and go to properties and go to Compatibility> go to the list and check the Windows 98/ME setting then clcik the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for"> then Enjoy at your Leisure...

I hope that helps you :)

Well tip for the future, don't ask people on the internet if you should play any particular game. :P But yes, play Fallout and Fallout 2, you owe it to the series to at least try, and hey, they cost less than a pack of beer.

Don't listen to the coolaid. I had the same thought and bought the second one. It was bad. You'll be sorry you wasted valuable gaming time on it.

Thats an interesting reply seeing as you haven't necessarily said what you think is wrong with the game.

Its all a matter of taste.

If you only like snazzy graphics, average style humour and writing, sandbox exploration and heads that go boom then stick to Fallout 3.

If you like something a little bit deeper, a REAL RPG, good writting, decent main quests, intelligent/subtle humour, with a much more effective characte system, AND DON'T MIND TURN BASED/ISOMETRIC view, then obviously play both.

To be fair, the only games I have ever played that were isometric and turn based were Fallout and X-Com, and I hated Fallout at first. It was only after getting used to the style of playing that I fell in love with the game and regret not having played them before. It was also my first RPG. I stuck to FPS, RTS and so on back in the day.

So the bottom line is, at least try them. Its not like they are expensive.

I'm going to have to disagree with the subtle humor part. Most of the humor in FO2 is campy and a lot of it is way over the top, not to mention rife with out of game references. I'd agree with the rest of it, with the further comment that roleplay is somewhat diminished by dialogue choices that may not match the type of character you are playing, but that is true with any game which has specific dialogue choices.

Yup, $10 is it? That's a lot of entertainment for $10.

Yeah I was referring to both games there, not just Fallout 2. It does go over the top. I personally enjoyed it, but I can understand why it is unpleasant to some.

Interplay is offering the games for a very low price as well. Interplay's is probably the best deal as GOG offers both Fallout and Fallout 2 for $12, but for $15 you can get Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. Fallout Tactics isn't the greatest game ever, but for a couple extra dollars than what you'd pay for Fallout and Fallout 2 together at GOG it's not a bad deal.

Yes you should definitely play them. They are better games in certain respects but its really like comparing apples and oranges. It will give you a greater sense of the background and the lore and they are still some of my all time favorite games with lots of replayability. I would also reccomend Fallout tactics. Its a hybrid also. It has a some very interesting features like 2 different modes of turn bsed combat as well real time combat. you can do some very nice stuff because you have full controll over your NPC's. you can hire on specialists and set up kill zones and execute maneuvers etc.
