Adjustable height?

Post » Wed Dec 09, 2009 6:11 pm

The range of customization, I don't think, would be too wide. Smaller characters would be faster than larger ones, but since their legs are shorter it would balance out to give neither extreme an advantage. Different races would have different height ranges. For instance, the Nords and the Altmer's minimum and maximum height would be notably larger than the other races. Also, if they added in randomly generated NPCs to provide a more lively environment, randomly generated heights could create far more diversity.

Maybe, but I've always preferred fatness to be a consequence rather than an adjustable. Plus, I don't see the hero of Skyrim being a fat guy.

Why stop there? Why are you all thinking so small!?
There are incredible character generators for MMOs, and you think it can't be done in a single player RPG?

Ha! I hope Beth will teach you better.

Maybe a skinny guy though? I personally like my characters skinny, partly because they are generally non-brute force types and I think it just looks cooler. Maybe like skinny fit to barrel-shape fit.

That is a good idea. I also don't think that everyone including Uriel Septim should have rock hard chiseled abs (yes i know he died). But the thing that made me very upset was how if your character was small he was still just as wide. A Nord was just as wide as a Bosmer. That has to change.

Well... It wouldnt hurt would it? But maybe not... Since all races already got their height decided sortof.

Seriously I find this as one of the "I dont care"-things that have been suggested.

Maybe a little customization could be in...

I really want to be able to adjust body type. I want to be able to make my Nord slightly taller or shorter than an average Nord. A Bosmer thats a bit taller than the avergae Bosmer but you can't make them as tall as a Nord etc.
I want to be able to change the body shape too, muscular, lean/skinny, fat, kinda average etc. Sure my Nord Warrior will be muscular but I still want the options.

Bust slider.

You could use them as a secondary weapon if they got too big. :teehee:

I agree with the OP. I like the thought of a slightly adjustable height, it allows for slight variation both in yourself, but also within NPCs. Not only that, but it might help with immersion if you wanted to view yourself as a half-race, a shorter Nord for example could be considered a Nord/Imperial mix, or something similar, more internal satisfaction than having outright half-races.

I think it would be a great idea to be able to adjust your character's height, but there should be limits. E.g. a High elf should be able to become much taller than a bosmer.

The problem is that it requires a LOT of work on the modellers and animators... Not only do you have to design every piece of clothing for a male body and a female body, but you have to design each piece of clothing to fit properly on a very wide range of torsos... Personally I don't think that's worth the job, but if Bethesda is game for it then I'd happily accept the added customization.

In Oblivion, races had slightly different heights, but their bodies were all proportional scale models of each other, so it didn't require any extra modeling work. If you add a basic height modifier that works in that way, it would be pretty simple to integrate. But allowing for full control over both height and weight would require a lot of work, and would probably still lead to some clipping and odd looking equipment models.

Definitely more customization.

I hate that Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 had the same body type for everyone. If I want to play a bony-chested necromancer vampire, I'd want to be able to modify the body type of the character to reflect that.

Or if I wanted to play a heavy-set beer guzzling Nord with the most epic viking beard imaginable...

Heck, I'd event want to adjust hairyness overall... perhaps to play a character like Fenrir Greyback (a Harry Potter werewolf)

Yes I like this idea. Again, make each race have a limit, that way you can't make a wood elf as tall as a nord, but yeah, seems like a good idea.

I'd also like to see adjustable body sizes too. I agree that nothing breaks immersion quite like everyone in the game world all having the same exact body type.

Yes, you should be able to customize heights, however, as said before: a wood elf should never be able to be as tall as the shortest of high elves. So to some level, adjustable by 5% up or down of the race natural height?

I for one would definitely like to be able to set my character's height during character creation.
Edit: starting weight would be another nice option as well. Then maybe implement a system like GTA: San Andreas did where you had to eat and if you ate too much, you gained weight.
