It may help to speak with a few people in Passwall (if you haven't done so already);

1. Jayred Ice-Veins.
2. Nanette Don.

Armed with two items as a result of their help will significantly level the fight.

Then stop increasing your level, it only makes him stronger!

Seriously, the gatekeeper is leveled with you so that he's too strong to take on, without the assistance of the two characters already mentioned.

I killed Jayred with a mistake and Nanette is not too friendly. I'll take a look on the link.

Thanks

Right, the easiest time to kill him is at lower levels.

As mentioned about Jayred and Nanette could help alot. Jayred on intentionally. Nanette unintentionally, you may need to get Nanette's disposition up high.

If you can't find any silence poisons, try making some.

eh, man, your level is to high, as strange as this may sound, the level scaling makes the enemy's strength equal to yours (or at least close) and to be honest, i don't like this feature at all, its makes the game impossible to play realistically, anyway, you can either ask for help ( i would never do this, i just don't like it, no reason) or keep trying, OR you can lower the difficulty, ( but after you do this its hard to change it back, and makes the game addictive yet boring ) ja, thats its

The only way your level has anything to do with this guy, is if you attempt to kill the Gatekeeper without any help from the two people listed above. Then it's a tough, yet satisfying battle. (I usually hit the SI, at about level 25ish.) If you enlist the help from those two people, at about a Marksman skill level of 35ish, it takes two arrows. Done. Follow the clues in your quest log.

Some people don't want to lower the difficulty slider. I've touched my difficulty slider once in the time I've played Oblivion (over 4 years now, I bought it the day it came out). And that was to raise it higher than the default on my second time playing. To me, lowering the difficulty slider feels like giving up.

In this case, I tend to agree with you, because the gatekeeper is supposed to be tough. In fact, I'd say the gatekeeper is supposed to be very, very difficult to kill without the help of the characters mentioned above.

Generally speaking though, I view the difficulty slider as being an "adjust for believable combat" slider. If you believe that a common bandit should be more difficult to kill than your character, raise the slider. On the other hand, if you believe your character to be strong and durable, you might want to lower it a bit. Go very far from the middle in either direction, and things can get silly. (Some people believe in silly. :) )

The problem with moving that slider is that it doesn't really change the "difficulty" of the game at all. It just adjusts the relative damage dealt by you versus your enemies. It doesn't affect other NPCs, either, so if you push the slider way to the right, you can find yourself in the ridiculous situation where your heavily armored and weaponed character can't take out a fur-clad bandit, but some random NPC on the road can do it with their fists.

yeah I agree... but when entering the isles for the 14th time I care not for difficulty in this one instance.

Generally, I'd agree with you. However, if you happen to have OOO installed then you might disagree.
For example: On my current character (Faire Nalesdane) I have to play in third person (as I use DMC Stylish Blade Dancer to get 'proper' dual wielding) and since I've never used 3rd person before in Oblivion, I'm a little rusty in combat. So when I bumped into the quest where you have to find the woman's family mace and take it from her husband I ran into something a bit odd. I went through the fort, killing all the steel armoured bandits (I was at level 1 at the time) then, when I got to the guy I had to take Rockshatter from, I killed him with ease. However, the marauder boss was right next to him and she took off a quarter of my health with one swing of her (unenchanted) steel claymore.
At that point I had to adjust the difficulty slider a little, as a quarter of health for each hit from an unenchanted weapon is just stupid.

Sorry, I can't help you with the gatekeeper issue, but does anyone know how to kill a troll? Nothing I do seems to hurt them. Am I just too weak?

Everything I read says they're vulnerable to fire, but my flare spells do nothing to them.

Trolls also regenerate health, usually when they back away to run at you and are about to try to kick you. Hit the troll with a weakness to fire spell before you use flare. When you are at a higher level, no need to use weakness (at least for me), I just hit them with a fire sword or use any of the higher-end fire spells to take em down.

Go to the inn in Passwell, go up the stair to the room at the far end past the grumpy dark elf chic, read the letter on the table. then follow your quest log.

I've only killed the gatekeeper without help from the mentioned characters once, and it was on a level 1 character who had all of her majors at level 100. She was a high elf sign of the apprentice so she had like 300 magicka already... I summoned a lich and used myself as a decoy and it was really easy. So my best advice is if you can't use the help of either NPC, maybe level up some minors really high, and level up some majors without sleeping, so you will get more powerful while the gatekeeper does not. Or you can test your luck with mehrunes razor, I've never tried it on him but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you can lure him to a high rock/cliff and stand on it out of reach and bombard him with ranged attacks you might be successful.
