What is the best damage number for rifle and pistol?

I'm looking for a sweet spot for a player character with a 100 gun skill. Too much means you might just as well have 3000 damage. I'm looking for a damage for a mod. I've got a CAR-15 M forgery and A Light in Shining Darkness that is my pistol.
