Battlespire - Corrupted Disc?

I'm having some difficulty running my copy of Battlespire; I've owned it for a few years, but am only now actually giving it a try. The install in DOSBox was successful, and I created an image of the disk with which to play the game (and also in order to have a backup). However, while the image was being created, an error message appeared informing me that there was a read error in one of the files on the disk, namely videos/female.smk. I figured this wasn't likely to prove to be a game-crashing problem, but as it happens, it may well be: while I am able to create a character (of either six, as I wasn't sure whether the failed video would affect character creation), move around, swing my weapon, &c., the moment I try to enter into conversation with anyone (including the first scamp that you run across - making it quite hard to progress very far!), the game crashes, citing Code 0. Running the game by mounting the CD itself within DOSBox, not the image, causes the same crash, with the same error.

This has occurred when running both version 1.3 (the CD install version) and 1.5 (the latest patch). It would seem, then, that the disc itself is corrupted (or it may be a bug someone here knows about and can swiftly solve!). Any suggestions? It may be noteworthy that I'm running on Ubuntu 12.04, not a Windows machine, but given that I have no difficulty with Arena, Daggerfall and various other DOS games in DOSBox, I don't see that it would be of note (but given the bugginess of the past games, you never know!).
